Located at the base of the horse’s brain is a pea-sized organ called the pituitary gland. Specialized cells in this organ produce proteins and peptides, which the pituitary gland then sends throughout the body to perform a variety of specialized functions. One of the proteins secreted by the pituitary gland is called growth hormone.

While it was once believed that growth hormone was only necessary during growth and developmental stages, research has shown that it plays a vital role throughout the horse’s lifespan. Without optimal growth hormone levels, horses experience a reduced ability to repair and regenerate cells. They may perform below their peak capabilities, be predisposed to injury, age prematurely, or even die at a younger age.

When released into the circulation, growth hormone acts directly on cells to stimulate regeneration and repair, and in liver cells specifically, it triggers the release of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Whereas growth hormone only has a half-life of 20 minutes, IGF-1 has a half-life of 22 hours! Together, growth hormone and IGF-1 work as a signaling protein to prompt around-the-clock growth in young cells, and regeneration and repair in stressed or damaged cells. A deficiency in growth hormone leads to a deficiency in IGF-1, which in turn creates a reduced ability to repair and regenerate cells.

We see sooooo many posts today about lost dogs. CHECK ALL THE SHELTERS DILIGENTLY! Lots of people hold them for a short time and post them on social media before turning them into the shelters. Often finders turn them into shelters that are not even in the right jurisdiction. Keep checking them all...DON'T GIVE UP!

If you found a dog, check for microchipping. Any vet or shelter will do this for free. Remember, just because you haven't found the owners quickly, they are not yours to give away. Please follow all laws about lost pets so they can have the best possible chance at getting reunited.

Heat Alert Issued for Friday into July 4th Weekend for Inland Southern California

Southern California Weather Force has issued an inland heat alert for the highest temperatures of the summer season thus far, along with zoom-in maps.

Discussion: A ridge of high pressure will develop over the Southern California area. Normally, Southern California Weather Force will wait until Corona, California gets over 100F in order to know what the inland zones from there will do. Corona sits where the sea breeze comes through the 91 freeway out of Orange County, and when it goes over 100F it means that inland will be higher, which constitutes to an official heat alert to be issued.

Areas across Santa Clarita will be well over 105F due to this pattern, given close to 110F through the heat alert timing, which again is Friday into the weekend.

For now, use the maps here for the official heat alert number for your area. The coast will not be in this, as usually what happens during the summer.
