First day of free range freedom for this bunch! The chicks are 6 weeks and turkeys are 5 weeks. They're loving it! And we know they're safe in our .henhouse electric chicken fence. They have cover and shade for protection and comfort. And they're mostly supervised at this age and will still be indoors tonight where it's warm. We have another night in the 30's. 🥶

PS- we have at least 4 Tom's! They're already strutting!

We have another beautiful spring-like day in Missouri today! There's lots of projects to be done as we prepare for garden season. What homestead projects are you working on this week? I'm preparing to plant onions and potatoes, as well as creating a raised bed for asparagus!

Our incubator is full and after candling eggs this morning, I see we have more baby chicks hatching soon! 🐣 This big guy hatched last June and looks just like his daddy. He's been a great addition to our flock!

We brought home our first baby chicks almost 10 years ago and quickly realized it was a lot of work to keep them safe.

Raising chickens can be a rewarding experience, and it can provide you with a source of fresh eggs and meat. Here are some steps to help you get started:

1. Choose a suitable location for your chicken coop. It should be in a location that is easy to access, and it should be protected from predators and the elements.

2. Build or purchase a chicken coop that is large enough to accommodate your chickens, approx 4 sq. ft per chicken. The coop should be well-ventilated and have enough space for the chickens to move around comfortably.

3. Purchase or obtain chickens. You can buy chicks from a farm and home store, hatchery, or you can obtain adult chickens from a farm, etc.

4. Set up the chicken coop with the necessary equipment, such as an automatic coop door, nesting boxes, perches, and a feeder and waterer.

5. Provide the chickens with a balanced diet that includes a good-quality chicken feed, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.
