Here's an update on Diet-Associated Dilated Cardiomyopathy in dogs - we're finding it is NOT ONLY related to grain-free diets. There are still a lot of questions related to this disease process, but there are a lot of great people working on figuring it all out! If you have a dog that has been eating grain-free/boutique diets for some time and would like them evaluated, please let me know!

November is National Pet Diabetes Month - Diabetes is a common condition we see, especially in pets that are overweight and older. It is a disease that affects the body's ability to use glucose to feed cells through lack of or resistance to insulin, making the pet burn up its fat and muscle stores for energy instead. The extra glucose in the bloodstream can't make its way into the cells, so it is filtered out through the kidneys into the urine. This makes pets extra thirsty, so they drink lots of water, diluting out their urine. More water drinking = more urine produced = more potty breaks (and sometimes accidents in the house). Glucose (sugar) in the urine is a great food source for bacteria, so urinary tract infections are common in diabetic patients. The good news? Diabetes CAN be managed! If you have a pet you're concerned may have diabetes (or any other condition for that matter), let me know!

With Halloween right around the corner, it's important to remember to keep the stash of candy and treats out of reach from our furry family members. Chocolate and the sweetener xylitol are toxic to dogs, but there are other dangers to be aware of - check out the Pet Poison Helpline site here for more info! https://tinyurl.com/y8wljrhj

If only they could tell us what they're thinking...It'd make veterinary medicine a bit easier! Tag someone you know that's struggled with this age-old dilemma:

Fall is here! With the change of seasons comes another round of allergens that can affect our pets - I'm seeing LOTS of itchy pets right now with secondary skin and ear infections. Does this describe your pet? Let me know, I can help! PM me here or call/text 507.601.7476

Do you have any pets that are difficult to take to the vet? Maybe they get anxious or sick in the car. Maybe they freak out in the clinic. Maybe it is nearly impossible to even get them into your vehicle. These pets tend to miss out on important preventative care and examinations that may uncover health issues early in their development. I can help! If you have a pet or pets that could benefit from a house-call veterinary visit, send a PM or call (507) 601-7476!

Dr. Miller will be unavailable for appointments on Friday 7/21/17 for a wedding celebration. A couple appointment spots are still available this afternoon and throughout next week. Let me know if you need anything!

Heads up: The cardiology service at the UMN College of Vet Med is seeing a large number of purebred Golden Retrievers on grain-free diets (multiple brands) with taurine deficiency, which can lead to secondary dilated cardiomyopathy. Do you or someone you know have a purebred Golden Retriever on a grain-free diet? Let me know, and I can check them over and evaluate taurine levels - the cardiology service is looking to enroll affected dogs in their current study with UC Davis.

Chronic ear infections, skin infections, and general itchiness cause misery in dogs with atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies). In fact, these skin issues are among the most common reasons people bring their dogs to see a vet. CYTOPOINT is a safe, new therapy option for managing itchiness and skin inflammation in these patients. If you'd like your dog evaluated to see if CYTOPOINT would be an option for them, let me know!

This beautiful weather brings the creepy crawlies out in force! Lyme and anaplasma are commonly transmitted by ticks in our area, and heartworm can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Our pets can develop allergies to bites from fleas, making them miserable. Luckily, we have defenses against these various buggers. Let me know if you need anything!

A microchip provides safe, reliable, permanent identification. One study showed stray pets that had been microchipped were more than TWICE as likely than stray pets without chips to be reunited with their owners (Lord et al, JAVMA, July 15, 2009). Contact me if you'd like to get your pet(s) microchipped!

American Heartworm Society - Heartworm Basics

With spring rapidly approaching, it's a good idea to get your pets heartworm tested and start (or continue) on a heartworm preventative medication. Infected mosquitoes transmit the deadly disease, which is easy and affordable to prevent but difficult and expensive to treat. I can perform heartworm testing for dogs within minutes, right in the comfort of your home. For cats, a sample of blood is submitted to a reference lab for evaluation within a day or so. My comprehensive online pharmacy carries a multitude of medications for heartworm prevention, and I can help you decide what would work best for you and your pets. Contact me any time to set up an appointment for your pets!
