Trick or Treat!!! Halloween is a time for goodies. Caramel apples, pumpkin donuts, chocolates, and candy corn make for a delicious holiday. It is well known that chocolate can be toxic for our furry friends, but sugary candy can also pose risks for toxicity. Too much sugar can cause stomach upset, excessive thirst, and in severe cases electrolyte changes. TW: inferred gore. Last week we had the bravest of the bunbuns come in to see us. She is an outdoor bunny who presented with two very large raised bumps on her back that each had a parasite growing in them. The parasite is called cuterebra or “Warbles”. Cuterebra are the larval stage for a botfly. The adult botfly deposits its eggs near or in the opening of rodent and rabbit burrows. After hatching, the botfly larvae, which typically infect rodents and rabbits, enters the host's body through an opening such as the nose or mouth or through a skin wound. After several days, the botfly larvae migrate to the tissues beneath the skin where they encyst and continue their development. They then grow in the skin until they are ready to drop out of the skin. Cuterebra can also affect puppies and kittens. Would people like to see the extract from the brave bunny?
