TRAVEL REMINDER!

In July 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its entry requirements for dogs entering the United States. These updates aim to enhance public health safety by ensuring dogs are free from rabies and other diseases before entering the country. Understanding these requirements is crucial for pet owners and veterinary and animal care professionals. Read on for a breakdown of the current dog entry requirements.

For dogs that have traveled to rabies-free or low-risk countries in the last 6 months:
These are the requirements for dogs who have traveled to Canada or Mexico (as well as other rabies-free and low-risk countries) and are returning to the US.
Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
Dogs must be at least six months old at the time of entry or return to the US.
Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.
Dogs must be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form.
This is the only form that is needed and is completed by the dog owner. A receipt will be emailed to the owner upon submission of the form. You can print the receipt or show it on your phone.

Please note that the rules traveling out and coming back into the country with your pets are drastically changed starting Aug 1st. If you are planning a trip to Canada or taking your pet to other countries, please call us well ahead of time to start the travel process.

TW: inferred gore. Last week we had the bravest of the bunbuns come in to see us. She is an outdoor bunny who presented with two very large raised bumps on her back that each had a parasite growing in them. The parasite is called cuterebra or “Warbles”. Cuterebra are the larval stage for a botfly. The adult botfly deposits its eggs near or in the opening of rodent and rabbit burrows. After hatching, the botfly larvae, which typically infect rodents and rabbits, enters the host's body through an opening such as the nose or mouth or through a skin wound. After several days, the botfly larvae migrate to the tissues beneath the skin where they encyst and continue their development. They then grow in the skin until they are ready to drop out of the skin. Cuterebra can also affect puppies and kittens. Would people like to see the extract from the brave bunny?
