Born and raised in Stuart, next door to the Humane Society, Dr. Richard Strauss found that one of his life’s main interests was caring for animals. After school and on weekends, he volunteered his time to clean, feed and find adoptive homes for the pets in the shelter. Dr. Strauss followed his passion and attended Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Vete

rinary Medicine degree in 1986. He has been a practicing veterinarian in Port Saint Lucie ever since. Sandpiper Animal Hospital opened its doors on December 12, 2011 and specializes in Companion Animal Care. We offer wellness check-ups, sick/injured visits, vaccinations, laboratory testing, pre-surgical screening and surgeries. We also offer boarding and bathing, heartworm preventative, flea/tick control medication and Science Diet prescriptive food and treats. At Sandpiper Animal Hospital, we treat you pets as if they were our own.

When it comes to hurricanes and other disasters, our furry companions need a little extra TLC. Here are some essential pet hurricane preparedness tips to keep your four-legged friends safe:

🐾Collar or Harness with ID Tag: Make sure your pet wears a collar or harness with an ID tag and rabies tag. Don’t forget a sturdy leash!

🐾Medications and Medical Records: Keep your pet’s medications handy, along with their medical records.

🐾Keep an eye on weather updates and evacuation orders. If you’re told to evacuate, take your pet with you. Don’t leave them behind!

🐾At the first sign or warning of a storm, bring your pets indoors. They can become disoriented and wander away during a crisis.

Remember, our pets rely on us for their safety and well-being. By planning ahead and being prepared, you’ll ensure that your furry family members stay safe during hurricane season.🐾❤️

Symptoms of parvo in puppies include:
Vomiting, Fever, Weakness, Depression, Lethargy, Bloody diarrhea, Dehydration, Loss of appetite, and Weight loss.

The best way to prevent parvo is to make sure your puppy is fully vaccinated. Puppies usually receive a series of vaccinations (3 sets) between the age of 6 and 16 weeks. Puppies should also receive booster shots throughout their lives each year. This is a serious issue that can cause many to loose their new family members, please be safe rather than sorry.🙏

*WATCH FOR POISIONOUS BUFO CANE TOADS BETWEEN
MARCH- NOVEMBER*

Cane toads are dangerous to dogs and cats because their skin contains toxins. If a pet bites or eats a cane toad, it can lead to serious health issues like drooling, vomiting, tremors, and even seizures. Pet owners should be aware of these toads, especially in areas where they are common, and seek immediate veterinary help if their pets come into contact with them. Keeping pets away from these toads is crucial for their safety.

Heat stroke in dogs and cats is a serious condition that can occur when their body temperature rises to dangerous levels, typically above 104°F (40°C). Pets are particularly susceptible to heat stroke, especially in hot and humid conditions or when left in cars on warm days. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. Immediate veterinary care is crucial as untreated heat stroke can lead to organ failure and death. To prevent heat stroke in pets, it's important to provide plenty of water, avoid exercising them in hot weather, never leave them in parked cars, and ensure they have access to shaded and cool areas during hot periods.

As the Fourth of July approaches, we immediately think of the beauty of fireworks, delicious barbecue and fun. Our furry companions may not feel the same about the festivities.
Here are some pet safety tips to get you through the celebration:
🐾🎆 Keep your pets indoors well before it gets dark out. Try to get your evening walks in before sunset
🐾 🎆If you are aware that your pet is startled by loud noises, contact your veterinary clinic about noise aversion products
🐾 🎆Make sure your pet is wearing his/hers id tags and if your pet is microchipped please be sure to have all information up to date
🐾 🎆To lessen the startling boom of fireworks, leave on a t.v or radio for a background noise
🐾🎆 Please make sure to have all windows and doors closed and locked. Scared animals are great escape artist and will find a way out at any cost

🇺🇸PET SAFETY TIPS FOR MEMORIAL DAY🇺🇸

As the unofficial start to summer, Memorial Day is a great excuse to get outdoors and celebrate with your family and friends—including your four-legged ones. Whether you’re attending a party, barbequing or just soaking up some rays, it’s important to keep your pet’s safety in mind.

🐶Barbeques are probably one of the most popular Memorial Day activities, but remember that cookouts can bring with them potential dangers for your pets, including citronella torches, grills and a bevy of food and drinks. Be sure to keep alcoholic beverages away from animals, and remind guests not to give them any table scraps or snacks. Be aware and keep your pets away from dishes that may contain raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and avocado—they’re all especially toxic to animals.

🏊Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool or lake—not all dogs are expert swimmers. If your pet seems like they would enjoy a swim, introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they always wear flotation devices when on boats. Also, try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains potentially dangerous chemicals like chlorine. Many pool chemicals will cause burns to the mouth, throat and stomach, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your pet when they are around the pool. Also, be sure to keep any extra chemicals stored out of reach.

☀️Unless specifically designed for animals, insect repellant and sunscreen can be toxic to pets. Signs of repellent toxicity include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. DEET, a common insecticide in products for humans, may also cause neurological issues in dogs.

💦Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so if you’re spending time outside, ensure that they have plenty of fresh, clean water and make sure that they have a shady place to get out of the sun. You’ll also want to note that animals with flat faces—like Pugs and Persian cats—are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with those who are elderly, overweight or have heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

🌳Time spent outdoors comes with the added risk of curious pets escaping. Make sure that your pet is fitted with a microchip or ID tag with identifying information, or both.

🚗If you will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, make sure to never leave your pet in your car unattended, and keep a close eye on any personal items stashed in your car that your pet might ingest (e.g., gum or medications).

🇺🇸*Please keep in mind that Sandpiper Animal Hospital will be closed Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day. If you have an emergency, the closest Animal Hospital will be Veterinary Medical Center located on US Hwy 1 and Prima Vista*🇺🇸
