Joy is adapting nicely to her new environment! She has experienced a significant transition, moving from an apartment (before being surrendered) in the much warmer climate of Texas to an open sanctuary in the cooler surroundings of Washington. She isn't currently living full-time with her buddy Zoosk in the goat yard, but she will eventually. She is quite a sweetheart!

Yolanda and Susan, two of our wonderful volunteers, worked with chicks received from a neglect case. The chicks are currently in quarantine and we are helping them get used to being around humans.

Surprise! Meet Joy, Black Dawg Farm & Sanctuary's newest Livestock Guardian Dog!

As you all know we have been grieving the unexpected loss of our beloved Samarra. Zoosk, Samarra's partner and best friend- has been feeling her loss immensely and has been acting very depressed. As you may know, Livestock Guardian dogs work better in pairs, so having Joy join the team will be beneficial. This way they can take shifts and allow each other to rest while guarding our precious livestock.

Joy's estimated arrival will be April 26th!

I have had enough of entitled people thinking rescues and sanctuaries have to take their animals.
We do not.
Our friends at OFS, who are amazing by the way, received a nasty email today which Im sharing.
Sorry to say that this does happen to those of us in rescue.
Show them some love, let them know the work that they are doing with feral cats is so very, very appreciated.

Messages like this are not acceptable. OFS is a small husband/wife rescue. We are volunteers. We are not employees. We get dozens of requests for help with animals every day. We are not, casually, sitting behind a desk opening emails and answering phone calls - We are actively helping animals - We are, often, at the Pet ER for emergencies. Bringing in cats for vet appointments. Endlessly cleaning enclosures. Transporting animals to Seattle/Portland (that seems to be the majority of our lives these days).

If you need help with an animal, step UP! - Be their hero! Write ALL the rescues. Every single one. Ask for suggestions. Apply for Care Credit. Scratch Pay. Surrender your animal to the Humane Society (they have vets on staff). Join animal resource groups on Facebook.

If you have a true emergency and need help. Find help. If that does not pan out, send us a message. If that message is seen but not responded to, try again. Be kind. I will do my best to help, even if it is just to offer advice (which is, sometimes, all that I can offer)

It hurts to know that this particular cat, suffered for three weeks without vetcare. One single message for help Mar 3rd - And one single follow-up message yesterday ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ Sad.

๐Ÿพ Urgent Appeal: Help Us Honor Samarra's Legacy ๐ŸŒŸ

We are facing a challenging situation and need your support to cover Samarra's end hospital bill. The generous donation of over ten thousand dollars was a mistake, and the actual amount received was $650. The remaining bill stands at $9,942.44.

In memory of Samarra, we have a donor who will match donations up to $5,000! Your contribution will make a meaningful difference in honoring Samarra's legacy and supporting our sanctuary.

Losing Samarra has left a void in our hearts. She was more than a guardian; she was a welcoming presence to visitors and a beloved protector of our herd of goats. Zoosk is heartbroken and in need of comfort.

As we navigate this difficult time, we are committed to finding a new companion for Zoosk. We have reached out to rescue organizations and sanctuaries to provide a safe landing for a dog or puppies in need.

Your generosity and compassion can help us move forward and continue our mission. Stay tuned for updates as we strive to give Zoosk the companionship he deserves. Together, we can make a difference. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–

Samarra, a devoted livestock guardian dog, has passed away, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. Her name, meaning protector, perfectly embodied her role. Her bond with Zoosk, her loyal companion, was a source of joy for many. Samarraโ€™s nurturing care for the pygmy goats showcased her motherly devotion.

Her sudden illness and passing have deeply affected us, especially Zoosk. Despite efforts to save her, Samarra succumbed to cancer that had spread throughout her liver. The veterinary team at Olympia Veterinary Specialists provided excellent care, but her condition worsened rapidly, with pneumothorax eventually claiming her life. We are devastated by her loss.

A memorial and a tree planting in her honor will commemorate Samarraโ€™s spirit and the love she shared with us. We are grateful for the support and kindness shown during this difficult time. Samarraโ€™s memory will forever reside in our hearts.

Samarra, a devoted livestock guardian dog, passed away, 3/8/24, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Her name, meaning protector, perfectly embodied her role. Her bond with Zoosk, her loyal companion, was a source of joy for many. Samarra's nurturing care for the pygmy goats showcased her motherly devotion.

Her sudden illness and passing have deeply affected us, especially Zoosk. A visit to the internal medicine department yesterday, revealed that she had cancer that had spread throughout her liver. The veterinary team at Olympia Veterinary Specialists provided excellent care, but her condition worsened very rapidly, with pneumothorax eventually claiming her life. We are devastated by her loss.

A memorial and a tree planting in her honor will commemorate Samarra's spirit and the love she shared with us. We are grateful for the support and kindness shown during this difficult time. Samarra's memory will forever reside in our hearts.

Samarra just crossed the rainbow bridge unexpectedly. More information will be shared once we have time to process our loss.

Update on Samarra as of Thursday 6:30 pm:

Samarra is currently in a fragile state with no definitive diagnosis yet. It has been almost 30 hours since she was hospitalized. We are hopeful that the IV antibiotics will soon take effect and improve her condition.

Initially, Samarra was not eating and had urinary issues, leading to the placement of a urinary catheter. However, in a positive turn of events, she managed to get up and relieve herself outside recently!

The medical team has advised keeping Samarra hospitalized for an additional 24 to 36 hours, with plans for her to be examined by internal medicine tomorrow. To cover the anticipated costs of her extended stay, we have already charged $8,500 on our credit card.

If you are able to contribute towards Samarra's hospital bills, please consider donating by calling Olympia Veterinary Specialists at 360-339-3596, option four. You can also make a donation online at https://blackdawg.org/donate-today.

Your support is greatly appreciated during this challenging time for Samarra. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
