On this day of remembrance, we honor the resilience and courage shown on 9/11. We stand together in gratitude for the heroes—both human and animal—who served selflessly. Today, we reflect on the strength of our nation and the power of compassion.
Does your pet have a teddy bear they love? Or maybe your dog looks like a teddy bear! Either way, we'd love to see those photos!
On the second Sunday in September, National Hug Your Hound Day dedicates a furry hug to our canine companions. All day long, be sure to give your pooch your full attention. Even spend the day much the way your dog spends it.
How do you attract hummingbirds to your yard?
Happy Labor Day from all of us at VCA Richland Animal Hospital. We are closed today but will reopen tomorrow at regular business hours! All have a wonderful holiday.
The loss of a pet is often just as difficult, if not more so in some cases, than losing a human family member. Our relationships with animals are remarkably intimate and mutually supportive, as they love us 'no strings attached,' hold our secrets, and accept us 'just as we are.' When our daily routines include pets, the loss can be profoundly disruptive to our sense of home, sense of safety, sense of purpose, and sense of identity.
If you need help during your grieving journey, we hope you find one of these resources valuable: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/grief-and-bereavement---loss-of-a-pethttps://www.humanesociety.org/resources/how-cope-death-your-pet
Here’s to wet noses and tail wags, because it’s National Dog Day! 🐶🙌
Blind Dog Day recognizes the courage, adaptability, and resilience of blind dogs, and the special bond they share with their owners. Blind animals can be trained to localize and follow sounds such as clicks and whistles. In a household with more than one pet, a blind pet will often rely on another animal in the household to lead the way.
Do you have a blind dog? What helpful training tips can you share?

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.
Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.
If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.
Vaccines and Immunization are important and necessary to help prevent hospitalization and stress to your pet. Make sure to speak with your veterinarian on which vaccines are right for your pet's age and lifestyle.

Does your pet have a bestie?
Lots of summer cookouts end with cool, refreshing watermelon. Watermelon is fun for pets; the high water content hydrates them and the glucose gives them energy. However, pets often swallow the seeds or eat the rind, and both can block the GI tract. To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
Like many businesses, VCA Animal Hospitals is experiencing an IT system outage. We are still seeing pets but please know that our services may be limited.

Always remember to pack extra water and a travel bowl for your pets when adventuring outdoors this summer! Even when dogs are swimming, the can still be at risk for dehydration or heat related illness. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has fallen ill after spending time outdoors. #vcaspets
Approximately 25% of dog visits to the veterinarian involve problems with the skin and hair coat. Even in dogs not experiencing an adverse reaction to food, the skin and hair coat can be affected by many nutritional factors. July is Lost Pet Prevention Month! Shelters and rescues have an influx of stray pets enter their facilities in July, many of whom have run off during fireworks or storms. Ensure your pet is reunited with you, with a microchip. Unlike collars, this is a permanent identification that cannot fall off of your pet. It is important to keep your contact information up to date with your microchip company. Call your veterinarian today for more information!
