Happy 4th of July to all employees, patients and clients of Richmond Animal Hospital 🇺🇸 ❤️🤍💙
As we celebrate America’s birthday with fireworks, family and food…it’s important we be considerate of veterans and our pets 🫡 🐶 🐱 🐴 🐐 🐔 🐮 While it is tradition to celebrate the 4th with fireworks or shooting guns…it’s important we remember these loud noises might cause anxiety or bring back trauma from past experiences 😟🫣
It’s a good idea to plan ahead for days like today……
🚨 Independence Day safety tips:
1. Update identification tags and microchips
2. Exercise Pets before you begin any activities
3. Keep pets inside
4. Set off fireworks away from pets
5. Close all windows and doors
6. Turn on a tv, radio or fan for noise
7. Medicate pet if needed
8. Clean up fireworks afterwards
If this happens for the first time, please know you can schedule an appointment with our fine staff to better prepare you for the next national celebration. We have many ideas, medications or tricks to help make your pet feel comfortable 😉

We have been seeing WAY more cases of this tick borne disease in recent years- anaplasma. 🐾 Make sure to keep your dog on tick prevention year round! 🐕 We carry credelio, nexgard and seresto for dogs and feel that they are all good products. We also have Vectra if you prefer a topical. Several other options can be found on our online pharmacy. 🐶 BUT (this part is really important) make sure you regularly check your dog for ticks and remove the ones you find. BECAUSE anaplasma takes much less time than Lyme to transmit once the tick attaches. We have heard from some sources that it can be as little as 4 hours. 🐾 If your dog does test positive, we will recommend to check a complete blood count, to look at their platelet levels, which help the blood clot. If their platelet level is low, there is a treatment we can use. #anaplasma #tickbornediseases #doghealth #blooddraw #bloodtest #ticksaregross #tickprevention
This little sweetheart was spayed with us this week. Isn’t she adorable?! #spayandneuter #veterinarylife #vettechlife #animalhospital #surgeryday #blueeyedbeauty #multicoloreyes #sweetpuppy
Here is a remarkable comparison of sweet Colden before and after his laser sessions.
Owner Gwen says, “The first is before his xray and at the height of his pain. The second was after his second laser therapy appointment. He speedily moved his short legs much further and faster than he was able to just a few days before. Laser therapy was great tool to get him back to normal, in addition to rest, and medication.”
A few years ago we asked for clients to send photos of their pets that we could use for decorating the walls of the animal hospital. We love when they come visit- it’s like they’re famous! #famous #famouscat #animalhospital #veterinary #VeterinaryHospital #orangetigercat
This cute little possum came to see us the other day! It has an injury that prevents it from climbing trees. So it will be living in a nature center in MA where it can be protected. Thank goodness for places like that, as well as wildlife rehabilitators. #wildanimals #wildlife #wildliferehab #wildliferescue #possum #possums #vettechlife #animalhospital #unreleasable #opossum #vermontwildlife #richmondvermont
This little girl was enjoying her visit! This was after vaccines. She was clearly unphased. Her brother was up on the bench snuggling with mom. #kittens #funatthevet
When you head into treatment to get your blood drawn and you find your twin (or maybe long lost brother?)! What are the chances?! #veterinary #doppleganger

The perfect, healthy birthday “cake” for your dog:
Ingredients:
-your dog’s regular dog food (no more than they would normally get for a meal)
-water
-peanut butter (regular, make sure no xylitol in ingredients)
-plain yogurt (low fat or fat free- again make sure no xylitol in ingredients)
- dog biscuits for decoration
Step 1- get a small bowl (metal, thick plastic or other material that can be frozen- probably best to avoid glass or brittle plastic as they could crack when frozen)
Step 2- pour dog food into bowl, leaving an inch or so at the top.
Step 3- pour water into dog food to just above the food level (could add a little chicken broth for a special treat)
Step 4- freeze for at least 6 hours or overnight
Step 5- mix up “frosting”- mix 2 tablespoons each of plain yogurt and peanut butter (less for smaller dogs. Can make the night before and keep refrigerated if desired)
Step 6- Remove the bowl from the freezer. Can allow to defrost for 10 minutes or so, or set bowl in a dish of warm water for a few minutes. Turn bowl upside down on your serving plate of choice and shake/tap gently until frozen food “cake” comes out.
Step 7-Spread “frosting” over “cake”
Step 8- decorate as desired with dog treats and serve to the special birthday boy or girl as their breakfast or dinner!
*these ingredients are all dog safe, but if your dog has health issues or allergies check with your veterinarian first.
*xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs, so it’s very important to check the ingredients on your yogurt and pb.
