"The Bond"
In twilight's gentle, fading hue, An ageing rider and her horse, so true. Years they've travelled, side by side, Through seasons' change and time's long tide.

Her hands now worn, once strong and bold, Still find his mane, their story told. With every wrinkle, every line, A testament to love's design.

They've seen the dawn of countless days, Shared quiet nights and moonlit rays. His steadfast gaze, her soothing voice, In quiet harmony, they rejoice.

No need for words, their bond is deep, A promise made, a vow to keep. Through life’s long journey, thick and thin, Her horse, her heart, her dearest kin.

As twilight fades to evening's rest, They stand as one, forever blessed. An ageing rider and her loyal steed, A friendship timeless, pure indeed.

This is awesome.

This is awesome.

I had a person call me today. Asked me about training.

It went something like this...

I'm a beginner I need help.

Ok

Well how long do you think you'll need for my horse ?

Ma'am I don't know I haven't met your horse.

I need her started. She's gentle. I'm thinking I can probably take her home and do it myself after 30 days.

Me... no.

So hear me out. 30 days, depending on the horse. Gentling. Saddling. Learning how to accept a rider. Learning how to carry the weight of a rider. Learning how to stop, guide around, have confidence while movement freely under saddle. Depending on the horse, getting out of the arena and confidence on the trail. Confidence without another horse on the trail. And the list goes on from there ....

At this point the horse may have a handful of rides outside the arena. A handful of rides. A handful of lopes under saddle.

This is such a small page in the book of the horses life. This isn't even a chapter y'all. It's a page.

Almost everything you and your horse do from this point out, your horse will be doing for the very first time... a new place, a new sight, a new experience...

And if you are a beginner... and you lack the confidence ... and you get into a sticky situation , you can create a lasting memory/behavior for your horse.

I'm not saying you need to leave your horse with me longer than 30 days to start because I'm greedy...I'm saying that because I want to see you succeed. I'm saying that because I want to help you and your horse get on the same page and be long term happy and successful partners.

While your horse is in training, Once a week you get a lesson with me. Do the math with the time I'm spending there with you including the full training. The feed, me paying my staff and everything else it takes to run things around here. I'm not making much on this...

I mean sure you can try... but it's my job to try to help you be as successful as possible. Mentally and physically long term, you and your horse.

I'll be in the barn.
When people have come to visit over the years
they commonly hear from me "I'll be in the barn."
When life gets hard I'll be in the barn.
When things are just right I'll be in the barn.
When the sun shines
The rain falls
Or snow covers the ground
I'll be in the barn.
If things seem to be falling apart or if I'm
celebrating the simple things, I'll be in the barn.
When I'm looking for answers or trying to clear my mind, I'll be in the barn.
When I'm looking for myself, I'll be in the barn.
If I'm working or trying to relax, I'll be in the barn.
Even when I'm not in the barn my mind drifts there, I find myself thinking about being in the barn...
It's where I keep my riches
All my wins and my failures
Every one of my hopes, dreams, hardships and
memories.
You can find them all in the barn, buried in the hay, hiding under a halter, spilling out of the feed bins,or glimmering with dust in the evening light.
I may be covered in dust, dirt, feed, hair, and hay, smell of sweat and manure, and sometimes there may be blood or tears but I'll be there. I'll be in the barn.
So if your wondering where to find me, I'll be in the barn. If I'm not there I promise I'm on my way.

"Take your reins like a flower, not like a stone. Take your horse by your waist and by your seat, not by your hand and never by force. If you do it by force, it is not the art of riding, it is something else." ~ Nuno Oliveira

This (possibly hard-to-swallow) truth will set you free 🦅⁣

Here’s what you need to know to make leaps and bounds in your horse-human connection 💫⤵️⁣

Your training results are 100% your responsibility—not your horse’s.⁣

You see, horses only know how to be horses: graze, search for water, play, fight, evade predators, mate… you get the idea.⁣

Horses must be *taught* how to operate successfully in the human world: carry a rider, don’t fear everything you naturally would, give a predator your feet to hold, get into a trailer with no way to escape… the expectations placed upon horses in our human world are pretty endless.⁣

And horses can absolutely thrive in our world! ⁣

❗️But it’s up to us to ensure that happens.⁣

As a trainer (and if you handle horses, you’re training all the time!), you’re a bit like a behavioral scientist. The animal can do nothing “wrong,” because you know they are simply acting naturally. It’s you’re job to understand the behavior in front of you… and if you want something more or something else, it’s your duty to study and experiment with ways to create what you desire.⁣

As behaviorist B.F. Skinner stated: “the rat is always right” 🐀⁣

When studying training & animal behavior in rats, scientists learned to never blame the animals, because that route cannot lead to the desired outcome.⁣

Imagine how silly it would be for someone to say “I want this rat to tread water,” then put him in water, only to be offended when the rat chooses to panic and swim around instead.⁣

This example may sound like a reach, but if you think about it, it happens all the time in the horse world.⁣

Stepping into responsibility in horsemanship is really hard. When you realize you can no longer blame the horse, you have to look in the mirror…⁣

Where you may face fears of inadequacy, failure, and imperfection.⁣

But when you accept responsibility, you also begin to step into your own power and freedom. You’re no longer at the mercy of the horse’s natural tendencies (which you used to think was sass, rudeness, disrespect or just a bad horse). ⁣

You are empowered to help your horse do what you want and feel GOOD while doing it. ⁣
