Cats are remarkable athletes! 🐈 Their superiority in speed, precision, and flexibility are only matched by their extraordinary ability to sleep 12 to 16 hours a day.

When they're not napping, they can sometimes get into dangerous situations. For example, their collars might catch on protruding objects, leading to potential injury or entanglement. Cats might also get their legs or jaws caught while trying to escape their collar, making it difficult for them to move. If this happens without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous.

Breakaway Collars with safety buckles are designed to prevent such accidents, allowing your cat to escape safely if they get caught. Even if your cat stays indoors, accidents can occur, so it's still wise to use a breakaway collar. Breakaway collars save cat lives! ❤😸

Meet Chicadee!

Chicadee a Maltipoo who was adopted from the Southold shelter ten years ago. At the time, the shelter estimated she was around 8 years old, a trainer thought she was 12, and her owner guessed she was between 5 and 6 — all based on the condition of her teeth!

Chicadee's official AKC name is Mela's Charming Chicadee, and she's earned some impressive titles: CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and TKN (Novice Trick Dog).

As she aged, Chicadee developed arthritis, a common condition in older pets. To manage her arthritis, her owner started acupuncture treatments in the city, where they spend most of the year. During their summer stays on Shelter Island, Dr. Muscarello stepped in to ensure Chicadee’s treatments continued seamlessly. Thanks to Dr. Muscarello’s excellent care, Chicadee remains active and enjoys galloping around her spacious yard.

If Chicadee continues to thrive and stay comfortable through the winter, her owner plans to keep up with her acupuncture sessions to maintain her well-being.

Meet Indie! ⭐

Indie is a 7-month-old French Bulldog who was rescued by Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter from a hoarding situation a few months ago. Due to her past living conditions, Indie has combined congenital and developmental vertebral and spinal cord changes. As a result, Indie has an abnormal gait that is characterized by ataxia (an uncoordinated gait) and paraparesis (muscular weakness).

The good news is that Indie is now being lovingly fostered by an EEVC team member and is receiving excellent care through EEVC's physical therapy and rehabilitation program. Thanks to the combined efforts of the shelter and her dedicated foster, Indie is making wonderful progress and thriving on her rehab journey.

While Indie may not have a “perfect gait,” she doesn’t let that slow her down and is perfect in every other way.

If you’re interested in giving Indie a forever home, please reach out to Save-A-Pet for adoption details.

Our dogs’ paws are just as sensitive as our feet. Here are some ways to protect your dog’s paws on hot pavement (or artificial grass):

🐾 Check the weather and take precautions before you take your pet outside. Asphalt temperatures can vary with air temperatures, cloud cover, wind, etc. For example, 77°F air temp could result in 125°F asphalt temp - and it only takes 60 seconds on 125°F asphalt for a dog's pads to burn.
🐾 Place the back of your hand on the ground for 10 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
🐾 If your pet can easily adapt to them, invest in a pair of booties to protect your pet's paws.

Symptoms of paw burn may include limping, refusing to walk, darker than usual or discolored pads, excessive licking or biting of feet, visible blisters, extreme redness, and missing skin or parts of pads.

If your pet experiences burnt paws, EEVC at (631) 369-4513 immediately. We are opened 24/7 for emergency care.

With us in the midst of summer, we want to make sure your pets are safe! Some things to remember are:

☑️ Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, seizures, bloody stool, and vomiting, to name a few

☑️ NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle (Even with the window cracked! Studies have found that cracking the window has very little effect on the temp inside the car.)

☑️ Educate your family and friends about the risks of leaving their pets in the car so they can keep their animals safe as well!

To read more on hot weather safety tips, check out this article from the ASPCA and share with your fellow animal lovers: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/hot-weather-safety-tips

Unfortunately, 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime and only 1 in 10 are found (AAHA). July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month and serves as a reminder to put strategies in place to keep your pet safe. Here are some additional tips:

🐶 Train your pet to come to you on voice command
🦮 Keep pets on a leash in unfenced areas
🐾 Microchip your pet and keep your contact information updated
🐕‍ Get your pet a secure and updated ID tag

If your pet does go missing, file a lost animal report with your local police department, post on community social media pages (such as Facebook or Nextdoor), check neighbors’ yards or video doorbell footage, scout local parks, and call animal shelters in your area.

07/17/2024

Nasopharyngeal polyps could be causing noisy breathing in your cat. Polyps are smooth, benign masses that typically occur in a cat’s throat or ears. It is unclear what causes them and they can occur in any age but are more common in cats less than 2 years of age. Polyps can also cause sneezing, nasal discharge, or even a change in your cat's meow depending on the location of the polyp. (AMC)

Noisy breathing is generally common in cats and can result from a variety of conditions so be sure to consult with your veterinarian to determine the cause and treatment plan.

If you suspect your cats' symptoms appear to be getting worse or impacting their quality of life, make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible.

07/13/2024

With summer weather upon us, it’s important to keep your pet well-hydrated! Generally, your pet should drink about one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. That may need to increase by 3-4x depending on their exposure to heat, activity levels, and diet.

Encourage your pet to drink more water by:
💧 Always supplying fresh water
💧 Clean the water bowl daily
💧 For pets that prefer running water, try a pet fountain
💧 Add wet food or more raw fruits and vegetables to their diet (just double-check that they are safe for your pet to consume)

Your pet may be dehydrated if they’re experiencing loss of appetite, reduced energy, lethargy, panting, dry eyes, nose, or gums, or loss of skin elasticity.

If your pet experiences dehydration, EEVC at (631) 369-4513 immediately. We are opened 24/7 for emergency care.
