As the summer heat drags on and we enter into the Dog Days of Summer, many waterfowl hunters have their focus set on retriever training in anticipation of the coming season. As important as it is to continually put in the ‘reps’ with your dog, it is equally important that you as their trainer are putting in the work to keep your dog healthy, happy, and well-rounded. So they can perform their best season after season.

1️⃣ Keeping Dogs Cool: Chances are if you’re feeling the summer heat so is your dog. Try and keep your dog in the water as much as possible.

2️⃣ Use Dog Ramps: All too often we see retrievers retired from the field early because of bad hips and joints, so take the proactive step and use dog ramps when loading and unloading your furry friend.

3️⃣ Hydration: Making sure your dog has access to good, cool water is imperative not only for your dog’s overall health but in their performance during training.

4️⃣ Exposure To New Locations: Training is inherently repetitive, it is important to mix up training locations to develop a well-rounded dog.

5️⃣ Patience: Your dog isn’t a machine. Dogs are living things that are trying to learn human commands, so have patience!

Working with the young dogs on marks! Getting to work with and watch these dogs develop their skills is one of the big highlights of this life. There is nothing better than watching the light bulb finally turn on and building on that progression!

It has been a very busy last 2 weeks here at Next Gen. The team split up to run some Hunt Test and a Qualifying. Dogs were on their game passing 16 Master test, 2 Senior passes and a Junior pass. We have 4 new titles as well - 2 Master Titles, 1 Senior Title and a Junior Title. Kash ran the Southern MN Qualifying and Placed 4th.

Ended this past weekend with 16 passes! 4 master, 5 senior and 7 junior. Thank you to Northern Flight Hunting Retrievers Association, staff, and judges for putting together an excellent test!

Building our young dogs properly is the key to a successful and confident hunting/competitive dog. Don’t be scared to take it slow, break things down, shorten up your sessions and just have fun. If you are having fun your pup will feed off of that energy and you will get a lot more out of your sessions. Every dog is different but almost all of them love food. We build focus and a good working attitude with food based rewards. Make your food high value, we like to use cut up hotdogs. With young dogs and puppies building drive and obedience with food will help motivate your dog. Using this strategy, you’ll start to see increased focus on you as the trainer and snappier responses to commands.

Only a few more days until our annual Client Day here at Next Generation Gun Dogs! We’re very excited to see everyone and spend the day working some incredible dogs. Everyone is welcome just remember to bring a chair! Training will kick off at 11am CST on Saturday May 25th and end around 4pm with a crawfish boil.

May 25th marks the return of our annual Client Day, which is right around the corner! We couldn’t be more excited to have everyone back with us on the training grounds. Training will run from 11am-4pm, so make sure you bring a camp/lawn chair, and we’ll be ending the day with a crawfish boil 🦞

There will also be some extra merch available for those of you wanting some Next Gen gear.
