April is national gardening month? Here's a tip from our Community Farm Specialist John -- "Get ready to plant cold-tolerant seeds like herbs, kale, chard, and spinach. You can start them more easily indoors, then when the weather breaks, they can be planted out in protected beds."

Today will be our last post of the season. As the growing season has been dwindling down the past few weeks we want to thank everyone for following along. We've grown so much at the farm from ... fruits, to vegetables, to herbs and flowers. We can't wait for next growing season to begin! We wanted to take time to thank John, our Community Farm Coordinator for all that he's done for the farm 🍅🥦🥒🌶🌽🧅👨‍🌾

Kohlrabi, also called German turnip or turnip cabbage, is a biennial vegetable, a low, stout cultivar of wild cabbage. It is another cultivar of the same species as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, Savoy cabbage, and g*i lan. It can be eaten raw or cooked.

Bok choy is widely used in Chinese cooking, frequently in soups, salads, stir-fries and fillings for spring rolls, potstickers, steamed buns and dumplings. Its mild flavor shines when it's stir-fried in sesame oil with a little garlic and/or ginger and a splash of soy sauce or a sprinkle of salt.

Every wonder what collard greens taste like? Raw collard greens are bitter, but not quite as bitter as kale. Heat mellows the flavor a bit and brings out a subtle earthiness. You can buy collard greens all year, but they taste best in the cooler months.

Swiss Chard can be steamed or sauteed, and it's great in soups, stews, casseroles, frittatas and quiches. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads. Chard always has green leaves, but the stalks can be a variety of colors.

Every wonder why they call it a head of lettuce?

The term head of lettuce describes those varieties on which the leaves grow in a dense rosette. Leaf lettuce describes the varieties with leaves that branch from a single stalk in a loose bunch rather than forming a tight head.
