ADOPTED
Pure of heart with all the happy feels best describes loving, precious Chestnut. This sweet boy only has the best intentions for everyone, including other dogs. A forever Toys-R-Us kid, he's been known to return to his kennel to fetch a toy to bring along. His enthusiasm is remarkable! Greets with a friendly, wiggly posture each time approached. Only positive vibes apply! Wanting nothing but love, playtime, interaction and connection. Rated level 3 for his excitement of leash tugging and love of toys. Chestnut readily approaches, leans in with a soft body, this defines a loving heart and a forever friend. Sadly the shelter doesn't value this amazing treasure and has set his death date. Now we search for a foster or adopter to save this adorable boy's life. They should all be this jubilant! If you are able to step up for Chestnut; please message us now. Time is closing in on him.

He makes one brief attempt to bite the leash while leashing but is easily distract and leashed with treats. He pulls hard to the street and pants excessively throughout the walk. He is easily returned to kennel.
7/11/23: Chestnut is reported to be biting the leash. When a staff member was attempting to leash him, he ripped their gown grabbing it as he was grabbing for the leash and they were unable to get him out. When handler approaches the kennel, Chestnut has a loose body. He is fed spray cheese while being leashed and this avoids leash biting. He is then taken out of the kennel and walked to the street. Chestnut is quick to relieve himself and does not react to dogs or other stimuli he passes. When called over, he has a loose, wiggly body and he leans in when pet. He is brought back to the kennel and returned without issue.

Chestnut is social with handler and allows petting. He runs around the yard and entertains himself with his toy. When a dog approaches the fence Chestnut runs and greets the dog with a play bow and a loose wiggly body. He becomes frustrated after some time and begins to screech and vocalize while muzzle punching the fence. Handler grabs the drag leash and pulls him away from the fence. Chestnut begins to lunge and
6/10/23: Chestnut is at the front of the kennel loose and wiggly when approached. He is easily leashed and taken out of kennel. In the hallway, he barks at a male handler walking in his general direction. He is held away and taken outside for a street walk where he pulls hard and does not react to dogs or other stimuli. He is then returned to kennel where some pressure is applied to the leash to get him in
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chestnut so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to exuberance and potential resource guarding observed at the care center, we recommend a home without children.
Potential challenges: :
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,
Basic manners/poor impulse control,
Resource guarding,
Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments::
Resource guarding: Chestnut has been observed to become tense when the toy he was in possession of was touched during his assessment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding.
Basic manners: Chestnut jumps up in a social manner. See handout on Basic Manners.
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Chestnut has been observed to bark at people when walking in the hallway of the building, having a loose body when he does this. He has also been observed to whine and pull towards dogs when passing them. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
Leash biting: Chestnut may jump up and play tug with his leash. See handout on Leash Manners.
Chestnut is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. He is a social and playful dog who has displayed challenges with high levels of leash biting in our care, causing concern for an accidental bite risk. Medically, he is recovering from CIRDC.
Chestnut arrived to MACC as a stray with no known history. While in our care he has shown to be a social, playful, and energetic young dog. He may even bark when excited to meet new humans who approach! Chestnut prefers to keep his toys to himself and may be most comfortable enjoying them in his own space.
Since his arrival, Chestnut has displayed high exuberance and leash biting, playfully tugging on his leash which has caused concern for accidentally grabbing hands. He may best benefit from leaving the shelter environment and being placed into a home where he can have appropriate outlets for his energy and exuberance.
