Ewe-topia suffered another great loss when Joe Kapelos passed away last month. We had just lived the loss of Linda Leeman. This is heavy news and there is no good way to deliver it.

Joe was a lion and Linda was a lioness and together they were the heartbeat of Ewe-topia. They welcomed everyone to their training facility and had a way of making all of us feel unique and special. They helped all of us in so many ways, from achieving a healthier relationship with our pets to understanding some of the complex dynamics involved in herding, where three species come together to make magic happen. That was not an easy endeavor that they undertook, but we all benefited from their patience and their passion for dogs, and their fondness for the dogs’ owners. Not only were they champions of their students, but Joe was also a walking encyclopedia. The times were rare if ever that he didn’t know a breed or its history. We could go to them with all kinds of questions from canine health to just about any dog sport. And Joe didn’t only train dogs but often fondly recalled Barney, his bear that he taught to do agility while in the service. Joe and Linda both shared their wealth of knowledge with their students and enjoyed every minute of it. They were true coaches and mentors.

Although Joe and Linda have passed, the spirit of Ewe-topia will live on in each of us by using the knowledge they passed on and maintaining the relationships and community they built. Their passing has been difficult, but please remember the happy moments you had out there … that is the best legacy that Joe and Linda would have wanted.

A get-together is being planned where we can celebrate the lives of Joe and Linda for May 14 at Ewe-topia. Information will be posted here and on Facebook as it becomes available, but we do ask that you do not stop by the property until that time.

First, thank you to everyone who shared stories and photographs. These help tell a story of an amazing woman who touched so many of us and created an extended family through herding. Please keep them coming, they are a comfort to all of us who are devastated by this tragic loss.

Second, Joe is doing well and he is well supported. However, please continue to respect his privacy and refrain from calling him.

Third, Ewe-topia will not be opening on January 22nd and all lessons are suspended until further notice. Keep watching for updates as information becomes available; we expect the future to unfold slowly.

Fourth, we will not be posting any speculative information, so there may be many unanswered questions. We are sorry but ask everyone to please exercise patience, tolerance and forgiveness.

Finally, for anyone wishing to, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compass Point Rescue, a nonprofit rescue organization that is "breathing life into second-chance dogs". Please make donations by check and send to PO Box 11081, Tacoma WA, 98411. Linda (and Joe) were active supporters of this organization.

Linda Leeman passed away suddenly at home on January 9, 2022.

Our Ewe-topia community is as grief-stricken as Joe but know he is supported by friends and family.

Joe appreciates your thoughts and prayers but please refrain from calling the house at this time.

We will post more information on our page as it becomes available.

In the meantime, feel free to leave a picture below that Linda took of your dog -- she loved getting those ribbon pictures and action shots.

With the hustle & bustle at this time of year, sometimes you forget how hard it can be for those who have lost loved ones-- a child, a parent, a spouse, a good friend. It is always harder at holidays like Christmas for those that have lost someone dear.

Althought life is hard and it is difficult to see the positive at times, we hope Ewe-topia can give people some happy times when they visit. Some students have told us that they forget their troubleswhen they are here.

Joe & I hope we'll see you in 2022 & become your herding haven.

Do you compete in ASCA? Have you completed a title but not received a certificate since August? It is because the computer program that keeps track of the competition results of all the sports -- conformation, herding, obedience, rally, and all the rest-- has not been working since August. The good news is that a new program should be installed in January.

Always keep any qualifying score sheets you get for herding for the life of the dog. In case there is an issue or lost information. In most other sports you can use your phone and take pictures of the results page and your ribbon stickers often the important information like date, club name, location, judge scores/placements, and if you finished a title.

🦃🐾 Our last day for 2021 lessons is Sunday, November 21. That is the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving!

Take advantage of this time and come often. You still need to exercise your dog--even in the rain. Your dog has FUN and will be more tired after herding sheep!!

We have a big propane heater and cover from the weather but many times our bad weather blows over our valley. That's why some of our students says we are in a "Banana Belt"

Our agility classes are small to give students lots of attention. Our classes are fun, lively, and productive. Also, classes are open to children. Call to inquire about availability. 253-843-2929

This is the time of year when wormy, bruised apples are on the ground. Bring them out to our sheep and they will enjoy eating them! Any stale bread, crackers, chips or pretzels are a treat for them too!

Bees, hornets & wasps are bothersome at this time of year. 🐝🐝🐝
They are particularly pesky when eating outside if you previously had a dog treat in your hand. Outdoor agility classes can ve trying. Here's a solution -- DRYER SHEETS. Have a few hanging out of your pockets or a few between the buttons of your shirt. While eating, have one by your plate or hold it in your hand. ItTWORKS!!
