Got Bots?

Those little yellow super sticky eggs that are seemingly impossible to get off your horse’s legs were deposited there by a brown hairy fly that look like a honeybee. This adult fly does not bite, but it irritates and annoys by buzzing around your horse's face and legs. When your horse licks or breathes on these eggs, the eggs hatch and larvae migrate through the mouth to attach itself to the horse's stomach.

Although most of the time the larvae in the stomach cause no clinical symptoms, large numbers of attached larvae can cause internal hemorrhage, ulceration, and intestinal blockage at the stomach's exit.

In the past, treatment was recommended after a hard freeze because adult bot fly activity usually stops when temperatures drops. However, if you use Ivermectin or Moxidectin early in the fall, you will eliminate the earlier larvae stages so that they never make it to the stomach. Using the proper preparation and dose is important so contact your veterinarian if you have any questions. For more information click on the link below.
