ABOUT NISSE, TOMTE, TONTTU:
In Scandinavian folklore a tomte, nisse or tonttu is typically associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas season. Tomte/Nisse/Tonttu is an honest fellow described as being a short man, no taller than 3 feet, having a long white beard, wearing a conical or knit hat with a tassel. Although small in stature, he is not weak and his caring spirit and worthiness help protect house and home. Known as a gift bearer he is considered something like Santa Claus, although not the same thing. He doesn’t come down the chimney at night, but through the front door, delivering presents directly to the children
He doesn't live on the North Pole, but in a forest nearby; in Denmark he lives on Greenland; in Finland he lives in Lapland. Traditionally he is found riding a goat or just walking around with his staff often in company with a horse, cat or other animal friend. It is traditional to put out a bowl of porridge with butter for him on Christmas Eve. Joy and Blessing
