Give a kid a chance. Support that motivated young person!
I was 17 years old the first time I shod a horse for real money. I remember sitting in the driveway of the ranch that hired me with three $20 bills in my hand. Took me all damn day, hot, completely frustrated, and there was bloodshed from both me and the horse I worked on. It was a battle!! I was young and knew nothing. But what I did know was that this would be my living forever. I knew right then and there that this was my calling. This is why god put me on earth. Amazingly the man that owned that ranch called me back 8 weeks later to shoe them again! I was blown away! I figured he realized I had little to no experience, s**t for tools, and was not qualified to take on this task. But he believed in me. Stuck with me. Continued to hire me back! For the rest of my high school career and years after, this guy kept using me for his horses hoof care. Now after 21+ years I’ve shod $2 Renegades tied to a Barbwire fences out in the windy pastures, to Million dollar horses in million dollar facilities. I’ve covered five different states and supported a family and raised two wonderful kids doing exactly what I thought was going to be a complete flop 21 years ago. I truly believe that if that first client wouldn’t have called me back a second time I would not be where I am today. No way. Not even close. The point to all this, is give the young guy a chance. Don’t hire him because he’s cheap, don’t hire him because u can cheat him easier than the veteran guy. Hire him because you believe in him. You never know. It may change his life forever..
