It’s less about whether or not to allow it than it is about whether or not your bird will willingly come off your shoulder when asked. Here’s some tips to achieve this without having to force your bird off your shoulder… 💚 Use treats! You can even pick a super special one that’s used only for this ask. 🩷 If you know your bird has an obsession with your hair, wear it up to avoid the issue altogether (or any other thing). 💙 Try working on this before meals when the motivation for a treat is higher if your bird needs more convincing to come down. 💜 Target training is a great force free way to allow your bird to make the decision to come down on its own. 💛 Station training is super handy for tiny, small and flighted birds to be able to fly off your shoulder and get rewarded elsewhere. 🩵 Don’t offer MORE reinforcement while your bird is up there if they aren’t sure about coming down. If they get treats and petting while there, they’re less likely to want to come down. 🤍 What might your bird be avoiding? Typically birds retreat to shoulders to avoid hands or something in their environment. Parrots have a crop which is essentially a storage area for food. It serves two purposes: 1) It keeps birds safer because it allows them to gorge at a food source. By quickly collecting as much food as their crop can hold, it keeps them from having to risk going out in the open often during the day to eat. The stuffed crop will slowly dispense food to the stomach at a rate that will not overwhelm it. 2) The position of the crop makes it easy to regurgitate this food for their young.
