Graduation day! ๐ŸŽ“ Congratulations to recent chemotherapy graduate Bella!
Bella initially became a patient of the oncology department with a diagnosis of Lymphoma in September 2022. She completed her first round of CHOP chemotherapy protocol March of 2023, and had 9 months of remission! Unfortunately she relapsed in December of 2023, but after a second round of the CHOP protocol she graduated again! Congratulations Bella!
Have you been lucky enough to witness an oncology graduation ceremony in the lobby? ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿฅน ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Meet the team ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป Introducing Jessie Sutton DVM, DACVS-SA! Dr. Sutton is our amazing board certified surgeon here at PetCare East! She is originally from San Diego but has been with us in Sonoma County for the past 8 years. She started her veterinary career as an undergrad at UCLA, then she attended veterinary school at UC Davis, performed a rotating internship at University of Pennsylvania, and completed the small animal surgery residency at UC Davis! She enjoys witnessing the human-animal bond daily, and being able to fix a variety of surgical problems, illnesses, or injuries. She feels very fortunate to have a career that she loves, and we will very fortunate to have her as a member on our team! Outside of the hospital she can be found enjoying local Sonoma county wineries, exploring hiking trails, spending time at the coast, reading, doing pilates, spending time with her husband, playing with her black Labrador "Sirius", and chasing her two kiddos around! ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐Ÿ’‰ ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฉบ

This month Russian River parks & recreation will be putting the dams in place along the river! This means slower moving currents, and deeper swimming holes for summer fun! However, with slower or even stagnant areas of water brings concern for blue green algae, or cyanobacteria poisoning. This bacteria is most often found in standing bodies of water including fountains, pools, lakes, ponds, bird baths, and puddles along-side rivers or streams. Overgrowth of this bacteria occurs when water temperatures rise. Blue-green algae toxicity can cause a variety of illnesses depending on which toxin is involved. Unfortunately some blue-green algae toxins can be fatal within 60 minutes following exposure, other less serious signs may include GI upset. If you think your pet may have come in contact with this deadly bacteria do your best to wash all contaminated water off with fresh water immediately, and call the closest veterinary hospital. To prevent potential cyanobacteria poisoning discourage your pet from swimming in any stagnant, or discolored water (not all algae is bad, but a good rule of thumb is to avoid swimming in areas with obvious algae blooms present), stick to areas of fresh, moving water, and always check the area for any posted warning signs ๐Ÿชง ๐Ÿšฟ ๐Ÿฆ  ๐Ÿพ

Foxtail season is officially here and well-underway! ๐ŸŒพ In California the summer months bring with them pesky grass awns best known as โ€œfoxtailsโ€! These problematic weeds can attach to any part of your dog or cats body with the most common locations being feet, eyes, ears and nose. However, they do not discriminate and have been known to pe*****te through the skin and migrate into deeper tissue! Some signs of foxtails can include a swelling between toes, squinting and/or rubbing their eye, sudden excessive sneezing, and sudden excessive head shaking. To avoid exposure try staying around manicured landscapes, and walking on trails without tall grass present. Keeping your pets furr trimmed, and brushing after outdoor adventures can help to catch any hiding in their furr. If youโ€™re concerned your pet is showing signs of having a foxtail give the hospital a call, in general removal is easier soonest after exposure! Featured here is โ€œHoneyโ€, one of two dogs seen through our emergency department earlier this month who successfully had a nasal foxtail removed!

Hi cat owners! ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿˆ letโ€™s talk about cat carriers for this months Fear Free educational topic! It is highly recommended by our staff that your cat arrives at our hospital in a carrier for a variety of reasons. The first being safety! Many cats live with other animals at home and may be dog friendly, but we can never predict what is going to come into the lobby and we want your pet to be as safe as possible, having a carrier provides that safety barrier! Carriers can be covered with a towel or blanket to provide a safer feeling environment that decreases stressful stimulation in the hospital. A secure carrier also prevents the potential of escaping in the lobby, or worse in the parking lot! Any soft or hard carrier is a great choice, however if you have a carrier with an easy-off top that is the preference! With tops that easily pop, zip, or slide off staff can remove your kitty with minimal stress or even perform the exam without removal from their carrier! If your feline companion needs to stay with us for a few hours then our staff members can place them in a kennel with the bottom half of their carrier, allowing them to have the comfort of items that smell like home, while staff can easily monitor them! For more information on the benefits of cat carriers, and carrier training visit Fear Free Happy Homes! (Photos courtesy of Google)

Happy Motherโ€™s Day to all the amazing moms out there (and yes, dog & cat moms absolutely count!) ๐ŸŒธ Reminder that while beautiful, Lilies are highly toxic and even fatal to cats! Many bouquets contain these lethal flowers, so be sure to check with your florist and opt out of any bouquets with Lilies if youโ€™re purchasing flowers for anybody with cats in their home! Exposure includes all aspects of the plants, and vase water! This can include drinking vase water, biting the flower or stem, and licking pollen from their paws or furr. Lillies primarily affect the kidneys with the potential for kidney failure within days following exposure. Treatment for exposure is aimed at protecting the kidneys with intravenous fluids therapy. If you think your pet has been exposed to Lillies please give our hospital a call! ๐Ÿ“ž ๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿˆ (photo courtesy of ASPCA)

Speciality spotlight ๐Ÿ’ก this monthโ€™s spotlight is on the surgery department here at VCA PetCare East, featuring Maisy the Pug with a lung lobe torsion! Maisy was seen through our emergency department after her owners noticed sudden changes to her breathing. During her initial workup chest x-rays were taken and the radiology report came back concerning for a lung lobe torsion (when a lung lobe twists on itself). The next step was a CT scan of her chest to confirm suspicions, and Maisy was definitively diagnosed with a spontaneous lung lobe torsion. The following day Dr. Jessie Sutton and our incredible team of surgery technicians took her to surgery for a lung lobectomy; the removal of the compromised lung lobe, leaving her with a complete right lung and half of her left! After a few more days in the hospital post-operatively she was given the okay to be discharged, and has been recovering at home with her family! Lung lobe torsion is an uncommon but life threatening condition that can happen to any breed of dog, however studies have shown that Pugs and Afghan hounds are more likely to develop a torsion for reasons unknown.๐Ÿšจ ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿพ

04/26/2024

As a 24 hour hospital we often get brought lost pets, and nothing makes our team happier than a positive microchip scan! When a pet is microchipped we are able to look up the chip number in both our client database as well as a universal database website. If the chip is registered we can easily call any phone numbers listed to get in contact with their owner! Microchips can be implanted at any time, during any health exam or vaccine appointment. It is generally recommended, but not required, to have chip implantation done during a sedated or anesthetic procedure due to the larger gauge size of the needle. This post is featuring a sweet cat named Indica who was recently brought in by a Good Samaritan who thought it was a bit strange when they found a cat wearing a plastic e-collar in their yard, with sutures around both eyes. After a quick scan we located his microchip number and a member of our client service team was able to get in contact with his owner, allowing us to be able to reunite Indica with his family a short time after he was brought to us! ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿ“ž ๐Ÿ“

With today being the infamous 420 ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿ’จ we thought it would be an appropriate time to discuss THC toxicity! Now first, we want you to know that staff at VCA PetCare East is never judging you for having THC products! It is important that you are honest with our team members to assist them in quickly making an appropriate diagnosis of THC toxicity. It is also imperative that you disclose what kind of product your pet may have ingested, such as second-hand smoke, live plants, trimmings, leftover smoked product, THC pens, edibles, or baked goods. Different products have different levels of potency, and edibles can contain other toxic ingredients like xylitol or chocolate. Signs of THC toxicity can vary from mild to severe, including unsteadiness, dribbling urine, disorientation, vocalizing, and flinching at fast movements. More severe signs may include seizures, comatose mentation, and hypothermia. Treatment options depend on how severe the intoxication is. If you're concerned that your pet may have gotten into ma*****na, please give our hospital a call! ๐Ÿ“ž๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿชด๐Ÿ™ˆ (photo courtesy of fda.gov)

Specialty spotlight ๐Ÿ’ก This monthโ€™s spotlight is on the internal medicine department here at VCA PetCare East, featuring Barley and a swallowed sock! Barley initially came through our Emergency department for GI upset, and not feeling well after ingesting a sock. Once it was confirmed that she did indeed have an entire sock in her stomach she was transferred to our internal medicine specialist Dr. Cindy Fisher, and her incredible team of technicians. Barley underwent an Endoscopy, a procedure where small flexible tubing attached to a camera was inserted through her mouth and traveled into her stomach, during which the sock was easily located and removed without any need for a full surgical procedure! Barley has recovered well and is happily back at home ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿงฆ

03/15/2024

Did you know that xylitol is toxic to dogs? Xylitol is a naturally occurring substance that is widely used as a sugar substitute in many products, most commonly gum and toothpaste. Unfortunately xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, or even death. When ingested xylitol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in a rapid - potent release of insulin from the pancreas. This rapid release of insulin causes a profound drop in blood sugar. Signs of xylitol toxicity may be vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination or difficulty walking/standing, tremors, seizures, or coma. In severe cases liver failure may occur. If you think your dog may have ingested xylitol, call us or your nearest emergency facility immediately.
