What Is Structured Daycare (and Why It’s Better Than Chaos Play)?

Most daycares are all-day recess.
Fun, sure.
But overstimulation → behavior issues → feral evening zoomies.

Structured daycare is different.
It’s slower. Purposeful. Trainer-led.
It builds:
🧠 calmer minds
🐾 better manners
💛 confidence
😴 and healthier play patterns

If your dog comes home tired but still acting unhinged… they don’t need more play.
They need structure.

Book your orientation day → first day of daycare is FREE.
This is what your dog has been missing. 🏹

🚨 SCITUATE BOOKED SOLID 🚨

Due to the incoming rain, Tuesday & Wednesday have officially hit capacity in Scituate. Our cozy little cabin is bursting at the seams with happy hooligans.

But don’t you worry… Norwell is wide open and ready to swoop in like the hero of the day.
If your pup needs a place to romp, recharge, or simply escape their own nonsense for a bit, hop on over to our Norwell location. She’s spacious, she’s stunning, she smells like fresh pine and good decisions. 🌲✨

Swing by for a tour, book an Orientation Day, or just come see what the buzz is about.
Your dog will thank you. Scituate will thank you. And honestly? We’ll thank you too.

✨ Joey the Shiba Inu ✨
Our guy Joey started with us last year feeling… well… like a Spicy Crab Rangoon. Nervous & reactive.

But look at him NOW.
In Norwell, we’ve been easing him into what we call Socials; tiny, hand-picked groups designed specifically for dogs like Joey who need a softer landing, more structure and a whole lot of “you’re safe here.”

And he’s thriving.
He’s watching. He’s sniffing. He’s choosing connection. Little victories that feel like big ones when you’re a Shiba working up the courage to dog with other dogs.

We’re ridiculously proud of him.
Here’s to more confidence, more calm, and more proof that progress doesn’t have to be flashy to be real.

🧠 Structured support
🐕‍🦺 Behavior minded approach
💛 A whole team cheering for you, Joey

🐾 PSA: Before You Book Holiday Dog Care 🐾

As we get closer to the holidays, we're seeing an uptick on social media posts offering in-home dog boarding and “daycare from my house.”
Here’s the important part most people don’t know:

👉 In Massachusetts, anyone watching dogs for pay, even ONE dog, just for the DAY, from their home is legally required to have a kennel license.
No license = no inspections, no safety standards, no oversight.

👉 Apps like Rover, Wag, Petsitter, Care, etc.. do not license, insure, train or supervise the people using their platform.
Those sitters are considered independent businesses, fully responsible for following state law… and many don’t. People lie, trust us. Especially about having experience with reactive dogs.

👉 Under Ollie’s Law, towns are cracking down due to the number of dogs injured, lost or killed in unregulated home setups.

Here in Scituate, Recurve K9 is the ONLY licensed commercial kennel. Inspected, insured, compliant and held to every state and local standard.

And in Norwell, we are one of only a select few.

Not only are we legally licensed, insured etc. we are owned and operated by Stephanie Curran, who is a certified trainer and vet tech with years and years of experience in the industry.

💡 Before you book holiday care, ask one question:
“Do you have a valid Massachusetts commercial kennel license?”
If the answer is no, your dog isn’t legally or safely protected.

Your dog deserves better.

What your relatives think holiday boarding looks like:
🎉 dogs swinging from chandeliers
🎅 dogs eating entire pies
💥 dogs forming tiny unions in the living room

What structured boarding actually looks like:
🛏 calm
🔔 predictable routines
🐾 enrichment
🧠 brainwork
😴 naps so deep you’d think we gave them a tiny weighted blanket

No matter how wild your house feels, just know this level of calm is possible.
And starting next week, Norwell gets a BIG announcement.

Before the holiday tornado hits, here are 3 quick ways to help your dog stay sane:

1️⃣ Create one quiet space they can retreat to: bed, crate, corner, whatever they love.
2️⃣ Don’t forget decompression walks.
3️⃣ Try a little structured sniffing or food puzzles BEFORE guests arrive (trust me).

And for when the big weekend is over?
We’re launching something special in Norwell next week to help your dog get their calm and focus back.
Stay tuned. ⚡️🐾

11/21/2025

As we near the start of the holiday season, we are already seeing an increase via social media- of inquiries for, and responses to-dog owners and service offerings-for dog boarding/keeping within caretaker’s homes.

Please be reminded that you cannot keep-for the day nor overnight-dogs, in your home or on your property, if you are operating as a business-without a kennel license-even for just one dog.

Those who are offering dog boarding or dog care services out of their homes, under app-based companies, which are designed ‘to connect’ dog owners with dog care providers, such as Rover, Wag, Petsitter [.com], Care [.com], etc., are NOT exempt from needing a kennel license.

Rover, Wag, Petsitter [.com], Care [.com], etc. are NOT employers of these pet caretakers – Rover, Wag, Petsitter [.com], Care [.com], etc. are platform applications, and those who use these apps to offer dog care services, are independent contractors, running their OWN dog care businesses. These caretakers determine their own fees, schedules, and are responsible to be familiar with, and adhere to, their local laws.

This means the platforms, such as Rover, Wag, Petsitter [.com], Care [.com], etc. do NOT provide their app users with insurance for any potential harm to pets, people, or property, nor do these platforms provide training, ensure qualifications, oversee concepts, visit the properties, contact community officials, nor assume liability.

And while these platforms may conduct some form of a background check and/or vetting process for their platform users, these are simply screening measures.

If we see or have verified that unlawful dog care services are being offered and/or provided, out of one’s home, we will take action.

Kennel license requirements, regardless of within which community you reside, fall under Massachusetts General Law. Service providers may be heavily fined, and/or issued cease & desist orders, under the municipality, which may not only bring existing dog boarding/keeping services to a halt, but such action may also result in dog owners needing to return from their trips in order to pick up their pets, if alternative ‘keeping’ arrangements are not able to be accommodated over the phone.

Unlawful boarding, keeping, daycare and dog training services have been a major focus for Massachusetts state officials, Animal Control Officers and Town/City Clerks, since the passing of Ollie’s Law, in 2024. https://www.mass.gov/info-details/ollies-law-information

Dog owners – please know that Ollie’s Law legislation’s introduction stemmed from numerous incidents of dogs becoming injured, lost, and even killed, while being ‘kept’ by (even legitimate) pet service providers, as a result of unsafe properties and conditions, untrained staff/caretakers, insufficient or absences of emergency plans, incident reporting, and accountability.

Ollie's Law was incepted to provide oversight ‘to increase safety in pet boarding and pet daycare services, by establishing statewide regulations, ensuring all home boarding/residential and commercial kennels, are licensed and inspected, require injury reporting, and create a pathway for developing future kennel standards.'

[In Massachusetts, a kennel is defined as a collection of dogs on a single property for commercial boarding, breeding, training, or a private collection of a certain number of dogs...]

[Commercial boarding is the business of providing temporary lodging, meals and care for pets for profit]

Dog care providers – please know that while we appreciate your desire to provide dog care services out of your homes, amidst an explosive, ceaseless and lucrative pet care industry, we have little tolerance, nor does the state provide margins, when these practices are being conducted unlawfully.

If you are providing or considering providing such services out of your home, we advise you to contact your local officials to ascertain the requirements, inspections and licenses needed to provide such services -before offering them to anyone.

[Dog service providers are free to care for other people’s dogs in the homes in which the dog(s) reside, without kennel licenses.]

Dog owners - please know that while your dog walker may be running a legitimate and trustworthy dog walking business – and our communities have plenty of these wonderful dog walkers – just remember that dog walking does not roll over to include dog overnight care.

Dog owners -please also know that Dedham has only two (2) lawful dog daycare/boarding options – Dogtopia of Dedham and Tails.

Dedham does NOT have ANY licensed in-home dog care providers at this time. Please advise us if such service is being offered to you.

The town of Westwood has only two (2) licensed daycare/boarding facilities-The Dog House on Providence Hwy, and Pet Providers- which is the ONLY in-home facility with a kennel license.

We view pets as just as much a member of your families as you do, and the fact that we oversee and inspect lawful and lawfully-pursued service provision properties, to ensure they are humanely sound, safe, secured, sanitary, licensed, and prepared- to ‘keep’ your pets -should be of great value to you.

This should also be of great value to pet care providers, as we want to work with you so that your business interests are protected and lawful, and so that we can be a positive resource for you, if you need one while caring for other people's pets.

✨️At Recurve K9 we’re owner operated, we know all the dogs and their quirky little habits. I’m a former vet tech and a certified trainer, which isn't super common among daycare owners. But that means that every inch of the Scituate and Norwell shops have been built FOR dogs, with dog safety and dog enrichment in mind, not corporate guesswork. We are not and never will be a chain OR corporate run..

✨️Here’s what we offer for our pups and their people:

🧼 Nail Trims & Dremeling: Quick, calm and drama free. As an appointment or an add on! (we have TONS of awesome add ons)

🍑 A**l Gland Expression: Glamorous? No. Necessary? Absolutely.

🎓 One-on-One Training: From leash skills to confidence building, completely tailored to each dog.

🎒 Day Training Programs: Drop off, we train and you pick up a more balanced dog.

🛁 Baths: For daycare + boarding dogs only (we aren't skilled enough to do fancy hairstyles!)

🦨 Skunk Baths: BY APPOINTMENT because smells that awful require more than a regular bath and we have the secret formula!

Structure meets fun. Your dog learns, plays and thrives with people who actually understand dogs (because we put our employees through training too!) and truly care.

If you’ve been thinking about joining the Recurve K9 Crew, here's your sign! 💛🐾

Our Story

A long time ago, a pit bull stole my heart. Years later I was working in an animal hospital and the local ACO brought in a pit bull type dog. His name was Rusty and after being locked in a house alone, for a month, he had broken through a window in an effort to save his own life. Unfortunately we were unable to save him, heartbroken and angry I swore that I would do everything in my power to make sure that would never happen to another dog again. Thus began my foray into rescue. Fast forward several more years.. We had become familiar with a few rescues and had taken on several fosters. Then one day, a local kid asked if we could take his dog because he just didn’t know what he was getting into when he got the dog and no longer had the time or means to take care of him. Sure, what’s one more? Enter “Zarek” or “Z” for short, a deep red roan pit with ridiculously over sized ears. Shortly after “Z” came home, I realized that he had some serious behavioral issues and that we couldn’t really ever adopt him out. As far as training, I really had no idea what I was doing so I started to read, A LOT. The more I read, the more I learned that the issue that most of these dogs had was not because of their breed, but because of a certain lack of training. In fact, most of the dogs that we ended up taking on, had some pretty serious issues that could have been avoided had they received proper training in the first place!

My roots will forever lie in rescue, I still help when and where I can but my passion, dare I say obsession, is training. I studied and received my CDT from Penn Foster, I am an AKC Certified CGC Evaluator and AKC Certified Trick Dog Instructor. I opened Recurve K9 Training and Behavior Modification in hopes that I could help keep dogs from ever going into the shelter. Bully breeds in general, hold a special place in my heart but I do work with dogs of every breed, size and age. My goal as a trainer is to help improve communication between dogs and their humans to ensure a long and happy relationship.
