Freaky Facts Friday ๐ตโ๐ซ๐
Today were talking Heartworms ๐๐ชฑ
Why do I need to test and retest my dog/cat?
๐น๏ธAnnual testing is necessary to ensure that the prevention program is working.
๐น๏ธIf you miss just one dose of a monthly medication,or give it late, it can leave your dog vulnerable and exposed. Your dog may also spit out or vomit the heartworm pill or rub off a topical medication rendering it ineffective.
๐น๏ธ The reason for re-testing is that heartworms must be approximately 7 months old before the infection can be diagnosed.
๐น๏ธThere is no cure for cats, so prevention is the only way to ensure they don't become infected.
When should you test?
๐น๏ธPuppies under 7 months of age can be started on heartworm prevention without a heartworm test, but should be tested 6 months after your initial visit, tested again 6 months later and yearly after that to ensure they are heartworm-free.
๐น๏ธAdult dogs over 7 months of age and previously not on a preventive need to be tested prior to starting heartworm prevention. They also need to be tested 6 months and 12 months later and annually after that.
๐น๏ธCats should be tested before being put on prevention and re-tested as your veterinarian deems appropriate to document continued exposure and risk.
Heartworm disease causes irreversible damage to your dogs/cats heart, lungs, arteries, and vessels and can result in death if not treated.
๐ข๐ฅJust ONE bite from a mosquito is all it takes to become infected!๐ฅ๐ข
Help protect your furbabies by making an appt with us for a heartworm test and to talk about prevention options! ๐ค
And lastly, enjoy this short video of some heartworms in a tube under the microscope. If you look closely you can see them all wriggling around ๐
