Dogs are special.

Dogs are as intelligent as two-year-old children.

Taz is joining us for a month of board and train. He is settling in for the next few days and then he will start. He is super handsome and makes me look good. 😉

Susan nails it again. I love this woman and want to be just like her when I grow up.

Reinforcement Builds Behaviour.

Be aware of what response you are rewarding each time you give out a cookie or toy. What did you reward?

Ask yourself ... What was that cookie for? Do I want to see that behaviour repeated? What did I reinforce? Does my dog have clarity in what I am asking of him?

"How to Create a Motivating Toy" is an article that you may be familiar with and may have even shared with your dog training buddies or students. But, it has never been on my blog! So here we have it, the article that has helped so many dogs who were not ‘into’ toys come to love playing with them and viewing a toy as a great reward. What will you choose as your 'motivating toy'?

Welcome Luna to the crew today. She starts training Level one Friday.

Take back the keys to the cookie jar! We all love our dogs; therefore it is difficult not to indulge them occasionally. However, Susan often says… "dogs are masters at shaping people”!

What is your dog shaping you to do these days?

A good question for us to ask with our dogs from time to time is "Who's Shaping Who?"

😁

A photo that never fails to make us grin, and goes so well with a quote from Susan. Thanks Anne for the photo. It also goes along with all the wonderful 'recharging' theme dog photos everyone has been sharing with us this week. (Say Yes Team)

I really need to stop watching dog videos and get on with my morning. One more...

Chaser the Border Collie knows the names of 1,000 toys. But can she make inferences about new ones? Learn more with Neil deGrasse Tyson in this NOVA l PBS tribute to Chaser's owner and trainer, former Wofford College Professor John Pilley, who passed away last month.

So we are working on getting video set up so we can post some of the things we do and dog training tips. Just waiting now for the GoPro dog harness mount and a new Micro SD card. This is going to be fun.

Behavior Works

Great info for dog trainers too...

LAZY TRAINERS WANTED
Shauna Roberts is a self-proclaimed “lazy trainer” working with 23-year-old Casper "only a few minutes in the mornings and not very consistently.“ "Then again,” she said, “one does have to learn how to train first…” The important point is that teaching these beneficial husbandry and medical behaviors to parrots needn't take a lot of time but there is a learning curve for the humans to acquire teaching skills. For starters, see my Ten Tips for beginners, below. And big respect to Shauna Roberts for being a lazy trainer...so effectively.😂

Ten Tips For Teaching Your Parrot Positively
1. Behind every parrot behavior is a reason; behavior serves a purpose.
2. Discover the reason by looking at what happens right after the behavior, called the “consequence.”
3. Parrots naturally choose behaviors that produce desirable consequences, called positive reinforcers.
4. The tricky thing is that every parrot is an individual with a personal parrot point of view about what consequences are positive reinforcers.
5. Teach your parrot what to do by reinforcing small steps toward the final goal. Don't ask for too much. Instead, celebrate approximations.
6. The bad news is you can unintentionally reinforce problem behaviors too, for example, petting a screaming bird to quiet it.
7. To avoid problem behaviors, don't reinforce them in the first place; arrange the environment to provide stimulating alternative activities.
8. If your parrot doesn't engage in the toys you provide, then the toys are really just furniture. Training is often required for parrots to learn to use them.
9. If you think your cages are big enough, check out a map of Peru. Then consider making an outdoor aviary out of an inexpensive carport frame.
10. Before adding another parrot to your flock, ask yourself how doing so helps the ones you already have.

Every dog needs a human who can lead. Not like a boss, but like a partner in a dance—someone who gives clear signals, rewards desirable behavior as it occurs, removes rewards for inappropriate behavior immediately, and sticks to the plan consistently until the new, good behavior is a habit. Be the person your dog thinks you are.
