A 10% chance of snow on Friday night had me walking the field today with a broom…go figure. I have a weekly arugula and spring mix order with that I never want to miss if there is product in the field, unfortunately that fabulous insulating property of snow also keeps the plants from perking up as the day warms. Hence the broom in the vegetable field. Let’s hope I cleared enough snow for the order. I didn’t want to remove too much insulation because we are supposed to dip into the teens later this week and I don’t have any row cover down. I can’t wait until I have a high tunnel and this turns into one of those “Good olé’ days” stories.

$4/bunch for carrots…worth it or not? Photo 1 made the cut for marketable carrots. Photo 2 made it to the wash table but weren’t marketable after seeing what was under the dirt. Photos 3-5 didn’t even make it out of the field due to obvious insect or rodent damage. The difference between spring and summer grown carrots are stark, and as a small grower who left $100+ dollars in the field today, the decision must be made whether the marketable carrots are worth the premium price that has been charged this season. Come see us tomorrow to see if these carrots are worth $4/bunch.

How and where do you cure a ton (maybe 200 lbs) when you lease land and have no infrastructure? However and wherever you can, like a messy utility room. On a side not, my basement has smelled like for the last week and I am craving some great Italian food.
