Controversy surrounds the efficacy and welfare implications of different forms of dog training with several studies asserting that electronic shock collars have negative welfare impacts while not being more effective than non-aversive methods. However, these studies did not specify the schedule and....

I’m always amazed that so many owners seem to think this whole dog training thing should be so easily and quickly mastered. These folks, who in so many other realms of development are practical and patient, eagerly dive into this one—expecting so much, so fast—and when met with frustration, challenge, setbacks, and disappointment…seem surprised.

I mean, you only need to study and learn to understand the intricacies of another species, which took your trainer years to develop. Then, you just need to get into a groove with the mechanical skill set needed to use the tools and training techniques which took your trainer years to develop. And then you just need to learn to become acutely aware of your emotional state, harness and control it to ensure you get the best and avoid the worst between you and your dog…which likely took the most amount of time, and is likely still being refined over the many years your trainer has been practicing their craft.

So what’s the big deal? Learn a new species inside and out. Learn a new skill set inside and out. Learn yourself, inside and out.

Sounds like a breeze. 😎

Creating a boundary and teaching calmness. I like to use this technique when guests come over. It prevents jumping and allows the dog time to calm down and make better decisions. .charlesil www.waggingrightsdogtraining.com

Bingo, on the right, is very people and dog reactive.
When we first arrived on scene, he wanted to eat my little guy Lyon.
I had him first while mom stood with my guy and we passed back and forth to remove some of the reactivity. Gentle leash corrections to tell him not to stare or lunge and bark.
Took about 5 minutes for him to relax.
Then we switched.
Asked mom to walk my dog while I made Bingo repeatedly sit at 10 feet away or so.
Took about 5 minutes for him to relax there too.
Then, I walked both simultaneously. Took Bingo a few minutes to stop trying to get my dude and relax. Then he followed no problem.

This is after a baton style hand-off from behind and mom took over.

Notice the free swinging arms, relaxed dogs, happy owner.

1hr....aggression to walking partners.

Confidence building with Augie. Helping dogs do new activities can help build their confidence. Getting successful repetitions can help nervous dogs build up a history of putting themselves in unfamiliar positions and coming out just fine. Oftentimes dogs start really enjoying these new activities and seeking them out on their own.

I do a lot of confidence building in public places. Helping dogs onto different surfaces and different elevated surfaces are a few things that I look for. Park benches, tables, large rocks, playground equipment, walking through sand or any uncommon textured surface.

Many of these dogs require a little leash pressure initially, but quickly start doing things on their own when they realize they don’t need to fear the new situation. Oftentimes directly facing an uncomfortable situation is the best way to build confidence and make a dog more comfortable.

Food bowl protocol and teaching patience. How does your dog get what they want? Do they scratch at doors, jump at you, spin around, demand bark? This lesson not only applies to feeding time, but you can apply it to many aspects of their daily lives. Teaching dogs that patience works is like giving them a key to every lock.

Patience and calmness are always good traits. I’ve never heard anyone say their dogs are too calm and respectful 🤣. Teach patience at thresholds, teach calmness for attention, teach patience for permission to get on furniture, teach patience to get leashes put on etc. Incorporate training the mentality you want from your dog into your daily routine and you will make so much progress with your dog I promise you. www.waggingrightsdogtraining.com

Our Story

Fellow dog lovers,

My name is Tim Rains and I am the owner and dog trainer of Wagging Rights dog training. I am proud to be serving the fox valley area. One of my biggest joys is helping people learn to communicate with their dogs and increase the bond between them. It’s amazing to watch dogs learn and equally as amazing when people realize their dogs can be helped. I greatly enjoy being able to solve behavior problems always with the goal in mind to improve the lives of families and dogs.

Since the age of 7 dogs have been an important part of my life. My family dog growing up was a 90lb brindle boxer named Champ. I always enjoyed teaching Champ to do things. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing was correct, but looking back on it I was on the right track.

My brother Waylon really furthered my interest in dogs. Waylon liked a lot of mastiff and bulldog breeds all in the working breed group of dog breeds and some in the terrier group. Waylon and I would talk a lot about our favorite breeds and what it would be like to one day own them. We would compare a lot of breeds and spent a good amount of time reading the Dog Breed Bible and many other similar books.
