On April 1st, Aprils Fools Day, we cellebrated the birthday of 8 Olde English Bulldogges. Lila and her littermates are 8 years old. I made PupCakes (homemade dog cupcakes with apple slices, shredded carrots, and Vollwerth's hotdogs baked in the center). Momma Bella will be 10 years old on the 17th. Happy Birthday Puppies.

Happy Snowy Halloween from the U.P. I didn't put costumes on the girls today. I was hoping the pumpkins and ghosts in the background would be enough. I wasn't counting on Mother Nature dosing us with snow. Stay safe on the sidewalks and streets.

Dog walkers beware: The woodticks are still out in full force. We walked our bulldogges along a trail and through the forest today. Bella had 7 ticks and Lila had 4. They are really tiny and black. You can barely see them on the penny or in their fur. We found them around the eyes, head, and neck of the dogs.

UPDATE ON THE DOG GOGGLES: I purchased 2 pairs of dog goggles to protect our bulldogges eyes during walks in the woods. They tend to run after chipmunks and squirrels. It would be best to start your dogs with goggles while they are young and you can train them. Both of my bulldogges rub the goggles off their heads. I tried a clip to their collars, but they are able to get the goggles off. Bella (bigger bulldogge) rubs her goggles off on the ground or with her paws. The rubber around the goggles slips off. The elastic isn't tight enough. Lila also fogs her glasses and rubs them off. She kept them on longer. I rate the goggles 2 stars out of 5. They are too easy to remove and it takes a lot of training and a cooperative dog (not a stubborn bulldogg).

We tried out the doggy goggles on a walk in the woods today. First, Lila tried to swipe them off her face with her paws. Second, she tried to knock them off by dragging her face on the ground. She moved them out of position but she was unable to get them off because I tied the elastic to her collar. The lens were soaked because she ran in the wet grass. The glasses did protect her eyes. So far, a thumbs up for $11.00.

I ordered a shark life jacket on Amazon for Lila to help her swim in deeper water. It is s $26.99. It is called A-MORE Dog Life Jacket. It has L.D. DOG in the side. It is a large for dogs 41-77 lb. Lila is 63 lb. I don't think the shark fin will stay upright in the water since it keeps flopping over. I needed to tighten the neck as much as possible because she has an 18" neck not 20". I also had to tighten the chest buckles. The length fits well (to her tail). It is light and easy to put on. The buckles are cheap plastic just like most harnesses. They will not hold a puller. The Velcro around the neck and chest is sturdy and an added protection. The handle is a fair thickness but I wouldn't trust lifting Lila with it. It can be used to guide her in the water. The O-ring is also plastic. You can hook a leash to it, but a puller will break this ring. Unless your dog is well behaved, use a proper collar and a leash. I took her for a short walk and she tolerated it well. I will let you know how it performs in the water once it finally stops raining.

We ordered a pair of NAMSAN Dog Sunglasses in size med/large on Amazon for $10.99. They are clear, UV protection, transparent, goggles, windproof, anti-dust, snow proof pet glasses with elastic straps. We bought them because Bella scratched her cornea while running in the woods. They are not water proof for swimming (sorry Lila). They do work for dogs who like to ride in cars with their heads out the window. The glasses fit both of my bulldogges heads. I tightened the straps around the head and under the chin. I took Lila for a walk with them on. They fit well. She didn't try to shake or rub them off. I noticed a little fog on the left lens even though they are supposed to have vents to prevent fogging. I am worried they could slip off in the bush. I am going to find a clip or tie to connect the goggles to her collar. The elastic and plastic frames are on the thin side. I will let you know if they stay on when she chases a squirrel into the bushes.
