PSA: As the temperatures rise, be conscious of the sidewalks and asphalt 🛑🤚 feel the outside floor with your bare hand/feet. If you can't leave it there for more than 5 seconds, it is too 🔥 for your pet to be walking outside. If you're taking your furever friend out for a stroll, keep in mind there are boots sold to stop your companions feets from burning. Stay indoors and 💦 hydrate. 🚨🚨🚨PSA: these pesky w**ds are practically everywhere in CA...

⚠️ Foxtails/cattails have a sharp barb that goes in 1 way & can require anesthesia to remove... On instinct, pets will try to shake, sneeze, bite, rub & do further damage to themselves.

Recent examples include: in the eye (led to an ulcer checked by a stain test, since the bulb poked the cornea) & nose after the pet sneezed 20 times til it was bloody

👍Rule of thumb have your pets on a leash, scout out locations where your pet is sniffing & rolling around.

📌Remove as much as you can on the fur, in between paws. If one does happen to migrate into the paws, nose, eyes, ears, immediately place a cone (ecollar) on your pet, confine to a kennel, & contact a veterinarian immediately!!! Do not attempt to break any pieces if you cannot remove the full w**d. Any piece broken off can migrate into the brain, lungs, spine, intestinal tract, & other organs.

🥽You can protect your pet with eye goggles, ear hoodie, outfox mesh field guard hat, coat, & all season booties.

-As we end April heartworm awareness month, Lilo the heeler reminds you for your 🐕 to either be on a once a month ORAL preventative or a once a year INJECTABLE, for 🐈 we have a TOPICAL 2 month one .
- Control mosquitoes on your property, remove all standing water. All it takes is 1 🦟 bite & 6 months later become positive on a test (FYI all heartworm tests only for females not the males), so even if it tests negative keep your pets on preventative!!!
-Yes, even your indoor pet needs prevention! 🦟 do not discriminate, they do not just stay outdoors...

Avoid taking your dog to highly trafficked areas: dog parks, community parks/yards, playing with unknown unvaccinated dogs, boarding/shelters. Screen your pet sitters/grooming/boarding facilities that extra sanitation practices are being done.

After a walk, when coming inside, wring out warm water on a soft damp hand towel and wipe head to toe including the nose/feet. Take a dry towel afterwards to do another wipe.

Do NOT wear outside shoes indoors & if you do choose to foster from the shelter/ save a pet from the street- please QUARANTINE/ISOLATE from your other pets for a MINIMUM of 3-4 weeks. Bring f***s to have it checked at a veterinarian for parasites (as some humans can get to!)

Yes, we have had some patients that were positive on a respiratory pcr test & developed pneumonia, thankfully they are responsive to treatment (the ones we have so far have not had to seek specialty care yet, so catch those signs early!) If you do have a sick dog, please schedule an appointment and WAIT in your car until a room is available. Extra sanitation protocols are necessary.

The long wait is over.... As long as parvovirus is caught early enough, 1 Intravenous (IV) injection in the hospital of the Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA) treats this viral infection (other supportive care is still necessary replacement of electrolytes/ fluid intake). CPMA has been a gamechanger & helps survival rates!

Reminder- quarantine/isolate INDOORS any new pets in the household for a minimum of 3 weeks to 4 weeks whether taking them in from the street/ fostering or adopt from shelter+rescues. Don't expose your current pets to the "unknown."
