4 Tips to Prevent Leash Pulling
⬇️ TIPS TO PREVENT LEASH PULLING ⬇️
1️⃣ Commit to a no-reward event for pulling against the leash (like stopping and 'shutting down' the walk)
2️⃣ Teach leash pressure (giving into it = reward) at home (low stress, low distraction) with food (reward) before taking it outside.
3️⃣Incorporate automatic sits at stops into your training routine. Begin by cueing and rewarding each sit, especially in the initial 30 stops. As they get the hang of it, transition to expecting the sit at stops and rewarding them promptly, with faster responses earning quicker rewards.
4️⃣ Make sure to have a clear understanding of what you aim to teach and accomplish; focusing on building mutual respect and effective communication through pressure applied on the leash.
If your walks feel like a constant struggle, it's time to integrate these key elements into your training routine. Consider this as a life skill; similar to riding a bike or driving a car, consistency is key.
While there's no shortcut to this, the secret lies in regular practice, even if it seems mundane or tedious. Trust me, the payoff in the long run is worth it.
You got this, I believe in you.

What is a PTSD service dog? ⬇️
To understand why those diagnosed with PTSD benefit from having a service dog, you must understand what PTSD is.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances.
People with PTSD often experience persistent distressing thoughts, flashbacks, and nightmares long after the traumatic event. They may also feel detached from others, avoid triggering situations or people, and react strongly to seemingly ordinary stimuli, such as loud noise or an accidental touch. PTSD manifests uniquely in each individual, making it impossible to identify solely based on appearance or behavior.
Psychiatric service dogs are a form of assistance dog specially trained to do work or perform tasks directly related to a psychiatric disability
PTSD service dogs perform various tasks to assist their handlers in dealing with some effects of the disorder.
Tasks PTSD service dogs perform include:
▶️ Alerts. PSD can alert their handlers that a car or a person is approaching, that it is time to take medication, or that their handler is experiencing a spike in cortisol levels or blood sugar. These things may cause or be signs of an oncoming panic attack.
▶️Interruptions. PSD can nudge, lick, or lay down on their handler if they are dissociating, experiencing a flashback, performing repetitive behaviors, or engaging in self-harm.
▶️Movements. PSD can perform specific movements at certain times to protect their handler from a surprise approach from the back. They can also provide a physical barrier between their handler and a crowd if that is a trigger for their handler.
▶️Guides. PSD lead their handler to safety if they are experiencing a panic attack, dissociation, or if a situation is unsafe.
▶️Calls. PSD can call for emergency services or contact a safe person or a counselor from a pre-planned phone if their handler is non-responsive or needs crisis services.
Having a PTSD service dog is linked to improved symptoms and quality of life, aiding better social functioning and regulated cortisol levels. These dogs play a vital role in supporting affected individuals, providing essential care that often saves lives and empowering them to move forward.
Is it time to hire a dog trainer?
Here's how to know:
▶️You want peaceful walks with your pup, but currently feel like you're hitched to a runaway semi-truck barreling at 80 miles per hour WITHOUT brakes.
▶️You want to go on a delightful patio meal with loved ones and pup, but you're struggling to manage your pup's Jekyll-and-Hyde leash behavior in public.
▶️You've tried using treats but your dog's 'meh' response is turning training into an uphill battle
▶️You know your dog's totally awesome, but their current antics leave you feeling disheartened and unsure of how to help them display their best self.
🔮What you need is
Someone who also sees your dog’s inner goodness and can provide you BOTH with a support system, expert guidance, effective leadership, and a reliable system, designed around YOUR shared success.

How to counter condition the fear of fireworks in your dog. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #dogmom #dogowner #PositiveVibesOnly #advice #helpingothers #dog #dogs #dutchshepherd #houstontx
Is it possible to help my dog overcome their fear of fireworks? 👇 Absolutely, you can help your dog overcome their fear of fireworks through counter conditioning and desensitization. Here’s a straightforward explanation of how I achieved this with my reactive dog: Step 1: Find a Safe Spot 🏡 Identify a secure and comfortable location for your dog during fireworks. In the video, We are sitting together up in the back of my truck. Step 2: Use a Secure Leash 🐾 Utilize a high-quality leash. I am using the Kubo Multi-leash by @littohowler , made with top-notch climbing rope and P-51 Auto-Locking Carabiners capable of withstanding forces over 1300lbs. It’s light-weight, durable, and suitable for dogs of all sizes - it’s my favorite. I’m OBSSESED. Step 3: Use a NO BUCKLE Martingale Collar 🐶 A NO BUCKLE martingale collar, especially designed for anxious or fearful dogs and those prone to slipping out of their collar, is VITAL. Step 4: Offer a HIGH-Value Reward 🥓 Prepare a high-value reward that your dog loves. In this instance, I made bacon earlier in the day for this purpose – crunchy and tasty, a double win. Step 5: Apply this Simple Formula 🎆 Associate the loud noises (fireworks) with the high-value reward (bacon). Whenever there’s a firework boom, offer your pup a piece of bacon. If they initially refuse, employ some physical empowering touch instead while still presenting the bacon. Consistency is key – continue offering bacon (or empowering physical touch) whenever you hear booms. Remember, booms must equal something positive either Your reassuring touch OR bacon. 🐾✨ Remember to be reassuring and create a sense of safety for your dog. Remind them that they are secure right where they are – with you. This simple formula, along with patience and some positive reinforcement, can help your dog build a more positive association with fireworks + other loud noises. 📌Save this post for later and follow for mor

WHAT IS A REWARD? A reward is something your dog sees as positive – think . . food, treats, play, praise, attention, petting, or their favorite toy. In training, rewards are given for good behaviors and learning, while being withheld for problem behaviors or mistakes. I use this to teach dogs the basic idea of “right” and “wrong”. To achieve this I pair the reward event and non-reward event with verbal markers, such as “Yes” (Give - Reward) and “Nope”(Remove - No Reward). Now we begin a learn-to-earn process allowing the dog to actively participate in the learning and even influence the outcome. During the learning process, I always start with low-value food rewards in a low-distraction environment and offer them frequently. Typically, I begin with kibble. If the dog shows little interest in the low-value reward, I may consider transitioning to mid-value rewards. However, I firmly avoid introducing high-value rewards until after the initial learning phase. High-value rewards are saved for high-distraction environments and for reinforcing behaviors during proofing (testing). They should be used at the end of the training process and less frequently offered than the low-value rewards during the learning process. Reserved for environments with high distractions, high-value rewards serve as a targeted reinforcement tool for refined behaviors, strategically introduced less frequenly in the later stages of training. To maximize their impact, I consciously regulate the frequency of high-value rewards, ensuring a more sparing use compared to their low-value counterparts throughout the learning phase. This is what helps it keep its value. ✨Here is an example of how to use the reward values when teaching loose leash walking✨ ▪️ Teaching loose leash walking inside with kibble in your dog’s classroom (low/medium) ▪️ Taking your loose leash skills outside the house to the front yard (medium) ▪️ Walking your dog around ot
