There has been several recent national and local (shelter ) news stories regarding a respiratory illness affecting dogs in various locations across the country. The initial source for this outbreak is not known. It is not known whether different regions of the country are experiencing the same infectious agent – these outbreaks may be independent of each other and caused by multiple factors .

Currently it is not determined that this is a new “outbreak/strain” or just the same infectious strains that are already known to cause respiratory disease in dogs.

Normal protocol should be followed as defined below-

To minimize the risk of canine respiratory illnesses we recommend you do not take your dog to dog parks and or socialize with dogs with unknown medical history.

Make sure your dogs are current in vaccinations, specifically if worried about respiratory illness . Bordetella, influenza and parainfluenza (part of DHPP) vaccines. Vaccinations reduce the chances of your pet getting sick. Core vaccinations rabies and DHLPP are standard.

Do NOT take sick dogs out to public places.

ALWAYS avoid communal/public water bowls.

Limit contact with other dogs; do not interact with any dog exhibiting signs of respiratory disease (coughing, sneezing, runny nose, etc.) or with a recent history of respiratory illness.

Dogs that have had respiratory signs should wait at least 3-4 weeks after signs have completely resolved before interacting w/other dogs.

People should take extra precautions to wash or sanitize their hands after interacting with dogs, to reduce the risk of transferring anything from dog to dog.

Here at Billingsley Veterinary Clinic we always clean and sanitize the facility as if every illness could spread, we will continue to maintain our high level of cleanliness.

Our beautiful orange tabby cat “ Nemo” crossed over the rainbow bridge yesterday! He was Dr. Billingsley’s late son Scott’s cat. We are not 100% sure how old Nemo was, but at least 17 years old. He now joined his dad Scott Billingsley in Heaven. We will miss our lunch sharing, lap sharing cuddling buddy! 😿🐈🐾🌈
