Turtles Swim but Tortoises Don’t. Here’s Why.

It’s been a few years since a shocking viral video surfaced. The woman in the video was “saving a turtle” by throwing it into the water. Unfortunately, what she believed to be a struggling baby turtle was, in fact, a tortoise. That single video caused such a ruckus across the internet that people finally began asking the right question.

Can tortoises swim? Tortoises cannot swim. At most, they can float and drift, and if they’re lucky they’ll bump into land. Some species of tortoises can swim poorly, but most will simply sink and drown.

Opuntia is one of the most favourite food of my tortoises but it is not always easy to bite and tear apart for the tortoises. So, learned this new trick from Emily Kane Tortoise shredded the opuntia pads and my torts just finished it in no time.

The first hatchling has escaped from the egg. Its yolk sac isn't absorbed yet so kept it on a paper towel ring so the hatchling doesnt damage it while trying to move around. Note : These posts are to educate people about the basic requirements of Indian Star Tortoises. Even though it is illegal to keep them as pets in India, people are anyway keeping them in captivity. Having no control over people, we are trying to educate people about keeping their tortoises healthy in captivity with the help of rescued and conservation groups. If you do not have a star tortoise in captivity in India, please do not get one

What are the things your tortoise do that amaze you the most?

For me it is when they stretch while basking.

Many people ask me that their tortoise do not bask in sunlight and always rush to a shade, what to do?

There can’t be a simple answer but to understand that situation think if you are not feeling cold, will you wear a jacket? No.

Same with tortoises. Majority of people keep them totally Indoors where the temperature range is very ideal for tortoises and do not need to bask to warm up.

Another reason is because smaller tortoises are at major risk from predators.
So, in wild they stay ambushed most of the time and bask in partial sunlight- shadow being camouflaged.

For indoor captivity, try to feed the tortoise in very soft sunlight during sunrise or sunset to help calcium absorption but also taking care that they do not overheat.

Tortoises prefer the outdoors and need ultraviolet rays provided by the sunlight. If kept indoors, tortoises need UVB lighting.UVB helps the tortoise process vitamin D3, which affects calcium absorption. Inadequate UV exposure can lead to metabolic bone disease

The Indian star tortoises are easily recognizable by their beautifully star-patterned shells. Typically shy and small, relative to other tortoises, they prefer natural sunlight and life outdoors but can adapt to indoor living with adequate heat, lighting, and humidity.

An emergency foster today for these 5 babies. Their family home has sadly flooded and so their humans are doing all they can to make sure their children and animals are sorted.

I Had a small operation last Friday so have spent the last days recovering. With a bit of difficulty, all the torts have been bathed and snugged.

Our 3 big herms🐢❤️ have definitely slowed down a bit, they hate this miserable cold weather.

This means that MO and Wilbur have their best gal back.
