I'm not sure we needed a study to know this....but now we know for sure. "Dog walking is associated with a considerable and rising injury burden. Dog owners should be informed of this injury potential and advised on risk-reduction strategies." Be careful out there!

A retrospective analysis was performed using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database to identify adults (≥ 18 years) presenting to US emergency departments with leash-dependent dog walking-related injuries between 2001-2020. Outcomes included annual estimates of injury ...

🐶🛏️ I saw a sweet dog this morning named Cessna and had a chance to observe her in her dog bed. She summed up, in one picture, the benefits of the right pet bed. If you have a larger dog, then a thick, padded, orthopedic bed could be the best investment you make for their comfort and health.
At Doodle Vet, we highly recommend orthopedic beds for larger dogs. Here are some of the benefits of these beds:
🔹 Superior comfort: Orthopedic beds have thick, padded cushions that provide a soft, supportive surface for your dog to rest on. They help relieve pressure on joints and prevent your pet from developing calluses and other skin problems.
🔹 Improved sleep quality: Just like humans, dogs need quality sleep to stay healthy. Orthopedic beds can help your furry friend sleep more soundly and wake up feeling refreshed.
🔹 Better joint health: Orthopedic beds are designed to distribute your pet's weight evenly, which can help reduce the risk of joint pain, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal issues.
🔹 Longer lifespan: Orthopedic beds are made with durable materials that can withstand heavy use and last longer than traditional dog beds. This means you won't have to replace your pet's bed as frequently, saving you money in the long run.
Feel free to message us if you need any help picking out an orthopedic dog bed for your furry friend. Your dog will thank you! 🐾❤️

It's raining so....I've got lepto on my mind!
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can affect both animals and humans. It is transmitted through contact with contaminated water, soil, or urine from infected animals such as rodents and wildlife. With Florida's warm and humid climate, the risk of leptospirosis is higher, especially during the rainy season.
Pets who spend time outdoors, such as dogs who love to swim, hike, or go to the dog park, are at a higher risk of contracting the disease. Some symptoms of leptospirosis in pets include fever, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and dehydration. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, it is essential to seek veterinary care immediately.
Prevention is key when it comes to leptospirosis. Make sure your pet's vaccines are up-to-date, and avoid letting your pet drink from puddles or standing water. If your pet spends time in areas where they may come into contact with infected animals or urine, consider using a leash to keep them under control.
At Doodle Vet, we are committed to keeping your pets healthy and happy. If you have any concerns about your pet's health or if you suspect they may have been exposed to leptospirosis, please don't hesitate to contact us for an appointment. Together, we can help prevent the spread of this serious disease.

I was outside for just a second last night and was bitten by a mosquito! Which is a good reminder that Heartworm disease is a condition that affects dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes. It is caused by a parasitic worm that can live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected dogs.

Heartworm disease can be detected with a simple blood test and treated with medication if found early. However, if not treated, it can harm your dog’s heart and lungs.

The good news is that heartworm disease can be prevented with monthly preventive medication and regular testing. This will keep your dog safe from this parasite and save you from worry and expense.

If you want to know more about heartworm disease or prevention, feel free to contact us at Doodle Vet. We care about your dog’s health and happiness :)

A new study this month is showing a relationship with "non traditional foods" (i.e. grain free) and decreased cardiac function in dogs. I'm really happy to see a group look into this as I've personally seen two dogs in severe heart failure after eating grain free dog food for several months. Both dogs lived and returned to normal but required support from a cardiologist and, obviously, a diet change. Ejection fraction was reduced by 8% in the grain free group!!

Background There has been a recent association between nontraditional diets and development of diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. Hypothesis/Objectives To compare echocardiograp...

I saw a dog last week with a history of some "moderately concerning" illness who was due for vaccination for distemper and parvovirus. We decided to run titers on the dog instead of giving a booster and fortunately she still had good immunity for those two diseases. I have to admit, it was kinda fun to actually determine if the patient needed more vaccines before giving them so I added vaccine titers to our routine services. We are not allowed to use rabies titers to determine if the rabies vaccine must be given but it is just fine for distemper and parvovirus. The cost is $90, we can run them Monday thru Friday, and results are back the very next day :)

Good morning! I found I have 12 doses of distemper vaccine that will expire on November 27th and at the current rate....I'm not going to go thru them all. But I'd rather give them away than throw them away! So until I run out I'd love to give your dog a free distemper booster. I'll still charge my usual housecall and exam fee ($75) but the vaccine will be at no charge. If you need anything else that I provide you can check out the prices on my website doodlevet.com and if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment, shoot me a message here or text me at 352 451 6699 :) Have a great day!!
