The CDC has issued new requirements for importing dogs into the U.S starting August 1, 2024. This includes traveling with your dog across the Canadian boarder.

To make the process as user-friendly as possible, an online program called DogBot is available for users to determine which rules apply to their dog based on dates of travel and where the animal is traveling from.

For more information on the new requirements, including a checklist of requirements and a timeline before travel, visit the CDC’s From August 1, 2024, Onward: What Your Dog Needs to Enter the United States webpage. If you have questions specific to Minnesota import requirements, please email the Minnesota Board of Animal Health at [email protected].

New Standard CDC Entry Requirements for all dogs (service dogs included) entering the U.S. by land or air from an international country:
* Be at least 6 months of age at the time of entry or return to the U.S.
* Have an implanted International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compatible microchip.
* This must have been implanted before any required rabies vaccination.
* The microchip number must be documented on all required forms and all accompanying veterinary records.
* Appear healthy upon arrival.
* Have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt
* This form will be available July 15, 2024, please refer to the CDC Required Documents page for more information.
* New guidelines have been implemented with airlines, please confirm requirements before travel.
* Additional documents will be required depending on where the dog has been in the 6 months before travel to the U.S.

Travel to/from Canada (a low-risk country) into Minnesota by land or air
If your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination was in the U.S.:
* Meet all standard CDC entry requirements above.
* Current rabies vaccine and rabies certificate (given at least 28 days before arrival) and
* USDA-endorsed export health certificate (if originating in a U.S. state) or International Health Certificate (if origin isn’t in U.S.) and
* Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination Form (can be accessed on Veterinary Export Health Certification System)

Entry requirements by land should be confirmed by Customs and Border Control. Contact the anticipated port of entry before importing a pet or other animal for expeditious processing and to reduce the possibility of unnecessary delays. Visit CBP Locate a Port of Entry for contact information on CBP ports of entry.

Pay special attention to the microchip/rabies vaccine timing, and also the need for a USDA ENDORSED health certificate, which means it needs to be sent to the USDA and then sent back to the owner. The owner will essentially need four documents: cdc dog import form, rabies certificate, usda endorsed export health certificate, and certification of US issued rabies vaccination form.

Heartworm disease is an invisible but potentially fatal threat that occurs in dogs and other animals. Heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) are parasitic worms that are transmitted to dogs by infected mosquitoes. These microscopic larvae develop under the skin, then migrate to the blood vessels of the heart and lungs of the infected animal where they rapidly grow, becoming adults that are 5-12 inches in length.2

Long-term effects of heartworms in dogs include severe damage to the vessels of the dog’s lungs, typically long before any symptoms appear. While treatment is available, heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lung, and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. The best way to prevent heartworm disease is with a monthly heartworm disease preventive.

Tick season is here! Don’t forget to get your preventatives!

Tick‐borne disease occurs when ticks infected with a pathogen bite a dog and transmit the pathogen into the dog’s body. Many of these pathogens are zoonotic, meaning they can also infect humans. Disease is not spread between dogs and humans directly because these pathogens must complete their lifecycle phase within the tick to become infectious. Therefore, while humans and other non‐canine family members can also become infected, a direct tick bite is required to transmit disease. The most common tick‐borne diseases are Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Hepatozoonosis, Babesiosis, and Lyme disease. The feeding time required to allow disease transmission from a tick to a dog or person varies between ticks and disease agents. Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever‐causing bacteria can be transmitted within 3‐6 hours of tick attachment, while Lyme Disease‐causing bacterial transmission can require 24‐ 48 hours of feeding before a host is infected.
