UPDATE on Sparrow's Pets: we are hoping to get on the schedule for September 8th Zoning Board Meeting in Delaware Township.
However, even if we begin the use variance hearing on September 8th, my attorney thinks we will be lucky to get a resolution in 2022 and predicts it will be early 2023 before we actually do. A normal use variance hearing lasts one, maybe two meetings. Meetings are only scheduled once a month unless there are unique circumstances, in which case, a special 2nd meeting might be considered if all parties involved are available. My case has an opposer so the process could extend to 4 meetings. With the holidays and trying to coordinate everyone's schedules, we will indeed be lucky to finish in 2022.
THEN...The opposers attorney has already told my attorney that if we are approved, they will for sure appeal. This will take another 6 to 9 months so we are looking at possibly 2024 before I am able to get my business back. During this time, Sparrow's Pets is to remain closed for boarding but I am still available for pet sitting(cats, dogs, etc) at YOUR house. I can also take your dogs/s to the dog park for a romp or... if you live super close by, I can offer dog walks.

Most of us dog boarders started our business from nothing. I started with -$600 and 2 part time jobs plus full time boarding. None of us had or have the kind of money that municipalities require to even begin inquiring about zoning or variances.

Unless you are lucky or wealthy enough to buy a *rare* property that is grandfathered in, you will need to run a variance on ANY property you seek to do business on. No matter the size and almost no matter the location. (double that if you want to live on the same property: mixed use variances can be two different processes)

Most towns will require $2k+ PER property you want to inquire about for a dog business (not including your legal and professionals’ fees of at least $1k-$5k+). And if they deny you, leaving you to run another variance on another property to inquire about, you do NOT get that money back! Simply getting zoning approval for your simple dog business can BANKRUPT you before you’ve made a cent.

Even if you are lucky enough to find a property already zoned for dog care, if you rebuild the rundown, old kennels, it’s considered a new kennel and you have to apply for the variance anyway!

That doesn’t even touch meeting licensing requirements which can easily run you thousands of dollars if it’s even possible for you to meet the asinine guidelines at all.

However, we can’t start discussing best practices and how to find them before we address why there aren’t more innovative, non-traditional dog daycares or dog boarders. Well-intentioned, but misguided zoning and licensing requirements are not only unreasonable and ineffective at their intended purpose, but discourage and block amazing, unique daycare and boarding businesses from beginning, marketing, and growing, especially those that wish to provide a low-stress, species appropriate environment that dogs thrive in.

It is time for change in how states and municipalities approach daycare and boarding zoning and licensing. Follow this page for the journey towards more effective and fair legislation to even the playing field for small business owners and increase your access to quality daycare and boarding options.

If you are looking for ways to make things easier during this crazy time, you can still get all your Doggie necessities without leaving your home.

I spoke with Andy at Barkley’s and he has waived his delivery fee to help everyone out. You can call in your orders and have it delivered to your doorstep.

For convenience, you can even set up a regular delivery schedule so you don’t have to give it another thought, going forward.

Barkley’s also has curb side pick up.

Fellow humans! In these crazy times, we will be juggling less familiar responsibilities and challenges with working from home and home schooling. Dogs need attention but that might be impossible while you are on a conference call or trying to explain that pesky Algebra problem to your kids. I am here to help by taking your dog for walks and even extended walks if they have a ton of energy! Pricing varies per task but will be fair and reasonable. For example; a 30 minutes dog walk is only $15 as long as we are in these circumstances. (Normally a 30 minute walk is $25.) Huge thanks to Andrea Beth and Kirstin Mende for their ideas, support and design!

Hello loyal customers and future customers of Sparrow's Pets! Despite not being able to board dogs in my own home anymore, I am still available to walk dogs, visit cats and stay overnight in YOUR homes to care for your animals while you are away. I am well aware that it is a different clientele that prefers this option but please keep it in mind. The price is $60 and includes two daytime visits as well. For example: I arrive at 6 pm, feed dog, take dog out for potty break and stay the night including any potty breaks needed. I feed dog breakfast in the morning, take dog out again before I leave around 8 am and then come back twice between the time I leave and 6 pm to take dog out again for at least 30 min each time. If you prefer 24 hour care, please contact me to discuss.
