The Other Family Doctor: A Veterinarian Explores What Animals Can Teach Us About Love, Life, and Mortality

I’ve had a few “fatally chomped” books over the years, but fortunately no library books. They always go for the corners!

I’ve had a few “fatally chomped” books over the years, but fortunately no library books. They always go for the corners!

We understand that library materials can look delicious to pets and young children, so the Middleton Public Library has unveiled a new policy for fatally chomped materials: in lieu of payment for the item, we would like to offer you the option of submitting a photo of the beloved culprit.

Today’s offender is Lloyd, a 3 year-old sheepdog mix who recently lived with foster mom Susie. Lloyd in not only a proud patriot (see bandana), but also loyal to his fellow dogs in the age-old dog v. cat rivalry. Naturally, he chose to chomp a book in the “Kitty Quest” series. Aside from this “crime of opportunity,” however, Susie reports that Lloyd is otherwise a responsible citizen who loves tummy rubs, new toys, and showing his enthusiasm through “crazy hops.” His new family adopted him on June 25th and he is adjusting well.

This heat is on! Keep your pets cool and safe and never leave a pet unattended in a car. If you see an animal in distress, please contact your local police department.

☀️🌑 With the solar eclipse on April 8 fast approaching, here's essential advice to ensure your animal companions stay safe and stress-free:

🐶 KEEP CALM: Pets are sensitive to our emotions and actions, so staying composed is key.

🐩 MAINTAIN THEIR ROUTINE: Stick to their regular schedule to alleviate stress during unfamiliar events.

🌞 NO GLASSES FOR PETS: Animals instinctively avoid staring at the sun, protecting their eyes without the need for specialized glasses.

🏡 INDOOR HAVEN: Keep your pets indoors during the eclipse to shield them from the crowds and commotion.

🐱 CALM ENVIRONMENT: If you will be out of the house during the eclipse, create a calming atmosphere at home. Leave lights on, play soothing music, and maintain a sense of normalcy.

✅ CHECK THEIR ID: Ensure your pets are microchipped and wearing collars with ID tags. This simple precaution could be invaluable if they become frightened by the commotion and run off.
