It’s official “Kiwi” now Leia, has found her forever home with the Dorr family in WY. While it was bitter sweet as always Leia has already settled in well with her new family and stolen their hearts (well maybe not the cat yet)! 🥰🐾

Still looking for her forever home. “Kiwi” was possibly going to be a keeper for our program, but it’s just not right time to add another. She is a 6mo old (born 5/15/23) full blood champion lineage Boxer (3/4 Euro, 1/4 American), and will be placed on limited (non-breeding/pet home only) AKC registration. Kiwi is out of my Mahogany Fawn bitch, BJ’s Crimson Dynamite & the imported stud Vasja Von Der Burg Singidunum (Buhringer’s Beautiful Boxers, Hanover CO) both with full health testing (ARVC -clear-, DM -clear-, and clean Holters/Echos). She comes with all age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, is microchipped, a 2yr congenital health guarantee, is house/kennel/leashed trained, and has been exposed to adults, children and adult dogs, chickens as well as horses. Happy 2nd birthday to BJ’s Crimson Heirloom (Josie)! 🐾🎂🥳

Josie spent the past weekend at the High Plains UKC show in Kiowa, CO. She was of course a bit overwhelmed with all the action but settled in for the most part earning 4 class wins, 2 reserve best female and 1 best female for 30 points toward her UKC Championship!

As we haven’t really “advertised” her she is still awaiting a forever home. Time for an update: (get ready, it’s a long one)

I’m sure many were confused after the silence following the thermometer picture with Dyna starting to whelp. Unfortunately, as can happen things didn’t go anywhere near to plan and there were and have been several complications. While Dyna only had a small litter (2 pups) the first was very large, and it became stuck in her cervix/birth canal. This prompted an emergency C-section to save her and hopefully the trapped puppies. The first large puppy as expected didn’t make it, but luckily the second (dark mahogany fawn female) was weak but rallied! We wanted to spay Dyna during the C-section, but the vets felt there was too much trauma already and recommended waiting until after Dyna had weaned the surviving pup. So we agreed and took them both home.
Now the fun of trying to keep Dyna from being hyper focused on her single pup as well as keep said pup nursing since while you’d think there’s plenty of milk for just one pup, in reality with the low demand Dyna struggled to produce. The puppy was not a fan of bottles/nursing syringes so that was a lot of work, but she kept gaining weight/size slowly. Sadly by the end of the week Dyna had developed a severe infection in her abdomen (leaking pus from her c-section incision and v***a) and had to have another emergency surgery. This one was ended up being the spay we originally wanted but delayed as well as a repair to the abdomen as the inner sutures had pulled with her inner wall pushing through. This tied with massive doses of antibiotics and we thought we were in the clear. Dyna started looking/acting better for a few days over the weekend, but then another decline. More swelling and leaking from her abdominal sutures appeared last Thursday, she again spiked a fever, developed a fluid mass on her shoulder and limping. So back to the vet we went. After examination and bloodwork it was determined she’d need a third surgery the next day. 😒
During the third surgery it was determined Dyna is likely allergic to the suture material used in the previous two surgeries and that is what caused the massive infection and severe immune system response. No with even stonger antibiotics and more hope we brought her home. At this point Dyna has no milk as well as the puppy can’t nurse due to the heavy antibiotic regiment. Luckily she’s decided (usually) the bottle isn’t that bad after all and her development is right on track with a fat and happy belly.
We’re done right…..well unfortunately no. Tuesday night Dyna started becoming uncomfortable again, and Wednesday morning spiked a fever of 106.5….So back we go again. Luckily her incisions are tight and not irritated but she’s definitely in pain and still dealing with a heavy infection despite as the vets describe as a “nuclear regimen” two separate antibiotics as well as some pain killers. It’s decided to help make her more comfortable, as well as keep her hydrated/strength up since she’s now not interested in eating, she’ll stay the day at the clinic on IV antibiotics/pain killers and fluids so they can monitor her progress. She came home in the evening with the fever broken, but still low in energy with an appointment to go back in the morning for follow up. This morning she still was fever free, but also still with a sore shoulder due to swollen lymph nodes and not much appetite. I sadly had to leave for a work trip at 5am (I’ve been off for the past month for her as well as our mare’s foaling which was another breeding cautionary tale). Erica is with her at the vet now for the follow up and it sounds like since her fever is gone and slight appetite has returned she gets to come home again after some additional fluids.

If you’ve read this far, thank you for sticking it out. I tell all of this for two reasons. One to let you all know what happened as many are invested in the stories of our pack as family and friends. The second is as a caution to those how think “I want to breed my dog as I want to have one of their pups”, “it would be a great experience for my kids to see”, or “Bet I could make some easy money off breeding puppies” etc. I’ve got a degree in animal breeding, and have bred my boxers and other animals for going on almost 20yrs. I’m prepared for what can/will go wrong and this was/is gut wrenching emotionally and financially. Overall this litter will be a huge loss financially, and luckily if Dyna continues to improve we don’t lose her. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t be a “backyard producer” (yes I specifically left out the word breeder) as there is way more to consider than just the “joy” of watching the birth of the litter and playing with the puppies as they grow. It’s a huge commitment and even when done with all the best preparation can go south in an instant.
