Thanks for putting up with me today I just got back from a seminar in north carolina where the topic were helping us build a more successful business. One of the topics was trying to get more reviews about our business on all the search engines. I know about yelp, facebook and google and sure there are more out there.

I watch this video at least once a week and today it made me cry. I love back when I could do this on the field I know with my body wearing down I will NEVER be able to physically do what I purely love. TIME and AGE brings great times to a close for all of us and I know that. The passion and drive of both man and dog in this video is what its all about.

I had a phone call this week from a lady that reminded me of WHY me and Dee started this in the first place.

The lady called and asked me if we took in dogs that had to be surrendered I could tell that her voice was cracking and told her we were a training club and asked what was going on.

She informed me that her 1 and a half year old German Shepherd had nipped/bitten someone at her house and had shown some bad behavior toward her young son. She further said that she had had this puppy from 8 weeks old and never thought it would come to this.

She had called a few of the local rescues and had been told since the dog had a bite case they wouldnt take the dog in and one rescue had told her to have the dog put to sleep. How in the hell does a rescue tell someone this. Why are they doing rescue. I know this rescue and know the prick running it and I know for a fact this is what this rescue does firsthand.

She had taken the dog to a trainer in Naples that after looking at the dog for only a few minutes told her they wouldnt work with this dog. She had contacted another trainer who stopped over looked at the dog and then told her it would be thousands of dollars to fix this dog.

After this conversation I could hear the lady crying heavily saying she didnt have that kind of money and no one would help her with her dog.

In a seminar this week the class was told to reflect on WHY you work with dogs and not WHAT you hope to get from the training.

This hit home with me in a way that made me start to choke on the phone. We didnt start this to make a business out of it or make money off people that wanted to truly help their dogs. We started this business for the reason we have on the van TO HELP YOUR DOG TO HAVE A BETTER LIFE. This drives us to change the outcome of any dog to be able to stay in their forever home and not be thrown away onto the streets or a kill shelter and being put down for bad behavior.

The WHY for us is so much stronger than the WHAT. I told this crying lady to please stop and that she wasnt going to throw her dog away or have it put down. I told her to bring her dog to our class for no charge and let us do an evaluation and get this dog on a path to stay in the home.

She continued to cry but began thanking me for giving her and her furbaby a chance. It felt so good to at least give this lady a chance to keep her dog.

This made my old body feel good and it reaffirmed why me and Dee continue to do this 20 years down the road from when we started.

This is my next post and it goes like this.

There are definites in dog training and the first is any dog that conducts proper behavior and is rewarded this behavior will become stronger and more likely to occur in the future.

Any faulty behavior that is corrected will lessen this behavior and is less likely to occur in the future.

When we talk about being rewarded remember it nots what we think a meaningful reward is to our dog does the dog feel its a reward worth working for. If we dont provide an effective reward we will find a dog that doesnt work for whatever we are providing. Sometmes finding that perfect reward takes some work to find.

And when i say corrected it doesnt always mean physical punishment it could be a meaningful reward withheld from dog upon improper behavior.

Training is pretty much a science and takes years to reach that level where you have a lot of tools in your toolbox for proper training.

We dont start your dog off on a pinch collar for punishment or an electric collar. The electric collar is the most misunderstood piece of equipment a lot of trainers use on your dog. The electric collar is a finishing tool for off leash training and distance training after the dog has mastered all the commands.

This must be my day to post stuff that I hope is helpful to people that look at our pages.

A friend of mine was out at a park today and met another training establishment in this area. Most trainers all teach the same things but its the way they go about it that makes the difference. I was so lucky in my time in police work and schutzhund work to see and work with some fantastic trainers that understand dog behavior.

This facility was telling a new student the choices were either a pinch collar or an electric collar and after reading the brochure they gave my friend I understand their thinking clearly.

They offer a two week board and train and a ten day puppy boot camp. This is enough of red flags that would tell me to stay the hell away from this facility.

Two weeks to fully train a dog is assinine. It took us 400 hours to turn a dog into a police dog that was 8 hours a day of training and 5 days a week.

How many dogs do you know that you can hand over to a complete stranger and this dog is wanting to work for this person. I follow some great trainers and the good ones spend up to a week building the bond to start the training That leaves one more week to fully train this dog. Impossible and very expensive not to mention when you get the dog back you know nothing of the way the dog was trained and it becomes impossible to keep the dog at whatever level you got the dog back.

It takes months of consistent work to train a dog to have perm behaviors. Stay away from people that say they can do a two week board and train.

They almost always put an electric collar on your dog on the first day and begin punishing the dog for behaviors it doesnt even know. We begin our dogs with force free positive training so the dog enjoys training with no punishment until the dog knows what is asked of it.

I just had two dogs picked up from boarding that were fear aggressive. They have never been socialized and out of the home they live in fear. The owners stated that they wear electric collars when away from house and shocked when they show fear aggression. Ill try to explain this as it really bugs me. It is clear the dogs are fearful and to shock dogs for aggression when in fear will never make the fear go away. I told them about taking time to socialize them but it was clear they did not want to take the time to do this right. I feel so sorry for the dogs knowing they will spend the rest of their life not being able to go out and have nice walks and to get petted and treated by others. Having a nervous scared dog is so unnecessary if you are willing to put in the work to help them. If the dogs mean so little to you please dont put dogs thru this lifestyle. Do without dogs, They deserve better than this.

We are now offering wednesday night k9 training in the group setting from 6pm-8pm if interested please call to schedule a spot as we are only allowing 8 k9 teams per class. Rusty and Ashland will be hosting this class and we will cover all basics including AKC Star Puppy, CGC, Advanced CGC, and Urban K9 training and testing. Classes will run the regular group rate of 40.00 per class.

Just read where another police k9 died in the back of a police vehicle after the air conditioning failed people this is not a new problem and has been happening to police dogs as far back as I can remember it’s so preventable don’t leave your dog in a car with the windows up ac units fail and dogs die a horrible painful death we always rolled the windows down and ac running and after 18 year in the K-9 unit we never lost a dog to this please be careful with your furbabies

This lady visited a shelter to adopt a puppy, then she saw this old abandoned blind dog who had spend already many years in his box without the love of a family. She went home with this beautiful dog🐾🐾♥️

I was going to let this slide by but the more I thought of this the more upset it makes me. I have been asked to board a rottie that I have known since he was born. I trained with him and his mother a few times boarded him for a long time then released him to the owner the ladys son who seemed at the time to be a complete moron. I havent heard from him for about two years until today when he contacted me to ask about boarding the dog again. This man still seemed to struggle with life and completely lost.

My point is I told him I could board the dog and will do so but when I asked about the dogs medical this moron didnt know if his own dog was current on his yearly vacs and had never had this dog on heartworm protection. He stated he doesnt have any medical records on the dog and dont even know which vet last gave the dog shots or when.

If anyone has watched a dog slowly dying from heartworms it is horrible . the dog struggles to breathe, has no ability to run around and enjoy life and just has a very poor life. Im hoping this dog is clear of heartworms but I know when the dog gets here he will be going to Choice vet for a full checkup, bloodwork, yearly vacs and started on heartworm prevention.

If you want to see the as***le side of me let me know this is how you are treating your dog. This hopefully will turn out good for the dog and poorly for this moron.
