We can mostly agree that many humans do a poor job of teaching discipline to their teenagers. Our goal as parents is to teach our children how to become responsible adults.
Yet… many treat their puppy as a puppy for the first several years making every excuse in the world. They do nothing to teach the dog to be responsible for their behavior.
The biggest factor in this is the ignorance of the onset of adolescence (teenage years) of the companion dog.
The average dog owner views the dog as a puppy until they have exhausted every possible excuse for its behavior…. This period for them typically ends around age 2-3.
So yeah… a 7 month old dog can be responsible for holding a down stay for 30 minutes during a lesson.
That is a teenager that is learning early on about discipline.
Be flexible with the standards at this young age based on the individual dog in front of you… but don’t be so flexible the dog is simply just training you.
