VERY IMPORTANT INFO PLEASE READ!

About ALT liver levels and Cotons:

I recently read on a coton group that I am a part of that someone was struggling to get their coton neutered because the vet did a basic blood panel before the procedure and found his ALT liver levels off so postponed the surgery and was ordering a host of other tests.

This is unfortunately one of the issues with owning a rare dog breed as most of us will go to vets who have rarely if ever treated cotons.

Many, in fact maybe most cotons carry copies of a gene that causes their ALT liver level to have a low baseline. This isn't any indicator of their health- as we all know cotons are incredibly healthy as a breed. It just means just like some of us could "run cold" or "run hot" their normal is lower than average ALT levels. Should your vet run a test and become alarmed at the level of "Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)" being low PLEASE reach out to me and I can provide them with lots of documentation about this consistently showing up with cotons due to their genetics not the health of their liver. The important thing for the vet to know is that "low" is normal and an elevated level for your dog could actually be in the "normal" range for other breeds. I have discussed this at length with our club health advisor and she has seen the same across our breed club.

Since I just saw someone posting about struggling with this issue I thought it was a great time to spread the word. Always take a breath before jumping into extensive medical testing and never be afraid to reach out- I may not know the answer but I talk to folks who have been doing this over the long haul and observed tons of specifically coton health patterns.

The face of sibling rivalry- Bijoux loves her little bone and was running around with it all morning, that is until Birdie proudly stole it.

The puppies are 8 weeks tomorrow- so why are they staying with us a little longer? It’s because these moments with momma and siblings are super important for their confidence and behavior! Momma teaches them limits and they also learn bite control by biting siblings who have tougher skin than us humans- they learn how much so too much.

Gus just arrived a puppy from last fall/winter. we get to babysit him this evening and Birdie his mom is trying to figure out what in the world is going on. Gus is here for snacks.

At this point in the game puppy raising is about them learning to be polite dogs which mom guides, but having other adult females around definitely takes a load off of her.
