Lauren works for the Lake County Animal Shelter in Tavares, Fl
Her and the staff at Lake County have been trying to help TED.
Ted came to our shelter in late summer/early fall of 2024 after he and his sister were found abandoned in airline kennels along the side of a highway. Understandably, Ted was terrified when he arrived and initially acted out quite a bit. At first, we had to use a catch pole for safety, he’s a large boy at about 135 lbs, but we quickly worked our way down to leashing him for daily walks.
I’ve spent a lot of time building a solid bond with Ted, and I can honestly say that in the right home, he has the potential to be an incredible companion. He loves other dogs and currently serves as our go-to dog for all of our dog-to-dog introductions.
To help prepare him for life beyond the shelter, I’ve been taking Ted on weekend sleepovers at my house. He gets along great with my own dog and has done wonderfully on walks around my neighborhood and even in busy downtown Winter Garden, FL. He pays little attention to people or bikes passing by and has not had any accidents indoors, so it’s very likely he’s housebroken.
Ted is still nervous around new people and situations (stairs are a bit scary, though improving!), but he warms up quickly to anyone who offers him a treat. He’s truly come such a long way.
Unfortunately, due to his size and strong personality, we are limited in how we can screen adopters to ensure he’s placed in an appropriately experienced home. For that reason, we’re hoping to find a rescue partner who can help us secure the best possible outcome for him.
He is at the Lake County Animal Shelter: 12280 County Road 448, Tavares, FL. Animal ID . Anyone interested can email
[email protected] or call (352)343-9688 and ask to speak to Lauren and I would be more than happy to answer any questions and go over everything with them.
