Teddy presented to our ER on July 26th after being attacked by another dog. He sustained deep lacerations to his back and sides but his most serious injury was to his abdomen. The teeth had unfortunately penetrated into his abdominal cavity and tore a hole in his abdomen allowing his intestines to be exposed. He was stabilized by Dr. Elizabeth Peck and surgery was performed that evening by Dr. Courtney Campbell. His care was assumed the next day by our criticalist, Dr. Trevor Enberg and Teddy spent 8 days in the hospital recovering from his injuries. He is a strong and very gentle dog with a very dedicated and caring family. He developed some pancreatitis and required placement of a feeding tube. Although he gave us all a scare requiring re-hospitalization for 2 days to manage pancreatitis, he seems to be on the mend now with healing of all of his wounds and return of his normal behaviors.

Benjamin was rechecked by Dr. Higgins and the Neurology team today. He underwent an MRI procedure last year and sustained a cervical FCE (fibrocartilagenous embolus), sometimes called a “spinal stroke”. He initially was paralyzed, but recovered and is walking well. He now wears a hat to protect his aging eyes from the sun. We think he looks very fashionable!

Zadie was seen today for a sedated CT scan and radiographs. Her initial complaint was limping but was unsure which leg was hurting her the most. After performing a CT scan, Dr. Ken Bruecker saw that she has small fragments in her elbow which is consistent with an OCD lesion, also known as Osteochondritis dissecans, which is an abnormality in the development of bone from cartilage.
Zadie was such a good girl and we hope she starts to feel better soon!

Luca presented to the VMSG surgery service for a front leg lameness, and Dr. Ken Bruecker ordered a CT scan. CT can pick up very small abnormalities better than x-ray, and the images can then be rendered into 3-D images to aid diagnostic and treatment efforts. Our surgery technicians, Emily & Sarah assisted with the procedure and Luca was an excellent patient!

Lung lobe torsion is an acute, life threatening condition where the lung twists on itself. It results in a profound inflammatory reaction and alterations in the ability to receive oxygen. Last week, thanks to the astute diagnostic skills of Dr. Elizabeth Peck, we were able to help Rusty in a timely manner. Emergency lung removal was performed by our talented board-certified veterinary surgeon, Dr. Joseph Raleigh and brilliant postoperative care was provided by our board-certified veterinary critical care specialist, Dr. Trevor Enberg. Rusty is now back at home and on the road to recovery. We couldn't be more thrilled to see him thriving again!

A special thank you to the amazing veterinary team that made it all possible! "

It is National Senior Pet Month! It was once thought that every year in a dog's life is equal to 7 human years. This is a myth explained by the AVMA: http://ow.ly/TYff50Lr5hS.
