Dear Valued Clients,
We are currently looking for a veterinarian to work here at the Vermillion
Veterinary Clinic, however, if we are unable to find one by June 1st, we will be
permanently closing the clinic.
Dr. Bessmer and Dr. Gross will be continuing to work at our sister clinic, Elk
Creek Animal Hospital, on Morningside Avenue in Sioux City, IA. You are more
than welcome to continue using our services there if you wish to keep your pets
under our doctors care.
We also understand that this may not be desirable or possible due to the
distance from Vermillion.
We want to be transparent about this situation so that it will give you time to
find new veterinary care for your pets. Our staff here and at Elk Creek Animal
Hospital will be able to email records either to you or your chosen veterinary
practice during this transition period.
Please know that the Vermillion Veterinary Clinic will continue to function as
normal and provide care to your pets until the end of May.
We want to thank you for your patronage and wish you and your pets all the
best.

Hi everyone,

We will be closed now through Christmas so that our doctors and staff can spend this time with their families. We will be back open at 7:30AM Tuesday for normal business hours.

We will have limited emergency hours from 8:00AM - 10:00PM this evening through Christmas Eve, depending on the availability of our doctors. If you are a current client with an emergency, give us a call at 605-741-8008, and you will be directed to our on-call staff member who will assist you with your issues and get ahold of a doctor if one is needed and available.

Hi everybody,

We have a big announcement to make!

Vermillion Vet Clinic along with our sister clinic, Elk Creek Animal Hospital, have been chosen as one of the select few clinics in the country for the early rollout of a new treatment for osteoarthritis pain in dogs, called Librela!

Librela is a monthly injection that functions like the body's naturally occurring antibodies, reducing NGF effects, which are a key factor in canine osteoarthritis pain. Unlike NSAIDs, there is minimal metabolism by the liver and kidneys. Because of this, Librela is safe for most patients to use either by itself or with NSAIDs or other therapies.

We cannot overstate how excited we are to have access to Librela. We see so many dogs here at the clinic that suffer from arthritis pain as they get older. Studies have shown around 80% of dogs over the age of 8, and around 35% of dogs of any age have arthritis. We are so happy to have a new way to help these patients.

Chronic pain can affect not only your pet's physical well-being, but their mental and emotional well-being too. Not only does pain affect your pet's comfort and mobility, it can affect their mood, their cognitive function, their sleep cycle, and their social relationships with people and other pets in the house.

While it may be new to us in the United States, LIbrela has been available in Europe for a couple years now. Almost 5 million doses have been administered, and it has shown be both safe and effective. Studies conducted in both Europe and America have shown improvement for patients' pain, an increase in activity level, and an improvement of quality-of-life after getting Librela.

Dr. Nick gave our first Librela injection to Abby's dog, Scout, at Elk Creek, and she was such a good patient for her poke. She was also a very photogenic model for the picture!

If you've got a dog that has been diagnosed with arthritis, or if they seem to be slowing down, limping, having trouble with stairs, or have stiffness in their legs when they walk, give us a call at 605-741-8008 and we'd be happy to set you up an appointment for Librela or give you more information!

P.S. If you've got a cat that has arthritis or is slowing down or seems to be uncomfortable as they get older, we also have Solensia for the treatment of arthritis pain in cats that functions in much the same way that Librela does!

Jade is a 4-month-old cattle dog and lab mix. We took these pictures when she was here for her puppy vaccine boosters. She was such a good dog for her exam, and we distracted her with treats so she didn't even notice she got a shot. She was so happy and just wanted belly rubs and attention.

Now that she's fully vaccinated, her owners can take her out to meet new people and pets knowing that she's protected from a whole host of dangerous viruses.

When the patient is so relaxed they're about to fall asleep during the exam.

Did you know that July is Pet Dehydration Prevention Month? With the Summer heat, it's always important to make sure that your pet has easy access to water. Be careful when going on walks to make sure that your pet is not getting overheated, and is not over-exerting themselves. Watch for the signs of dehydration, such as panting, vomiting, thickened saliva, sunken eyes and dry, tacky gums.

If you're concerned that your pet may be dehydrated, give us a call at 605-741-8008!

This is Stevie. She's a four-month-old Shar Pei puppy that we saw recently for her vaccine boosters and wellness exam. Stevie was very well-behaved for Dr. Gross, so we made sure to give her plenty of treats as a reward.

This video might not look like much at first glance, but do you see those thin strands that are wriggling around? Those are adolescent heartworms, called microfilariae. This sample came from a patient of ours at our Elk Creek location that tested positive for heartworms. If left untreated, the microscopic microfilariae continue to grow until they are mature. Mature heartworms resemble cooked spaghetti in size and appearance, and can grow up to 12 inches long.

This is why we always recommend yearly heartworm testing and prevention.

We've been seeing A LOT of ticks so far this year, so if you haven't picked up any flea & tick prevention from the clinic, we definitely recommend it!

Is your cat getting older and starting to slow down? They might be dealing with pain from arthritis.

Here at Vermillion Veterinary Clinic, we are happy and excited to offer Solensia injections for osteoarthritis (OA) pain in cats.

Solensia is a monthly injection that can help relieve OA pain in cats, and get them back to acting like their younger selves. Studies show that 77% of owners saw significant improvement of their cat's OA pain after three months.

Recognize the signs of osteoarthritis pain in cats with this simple checklist. This checklist can help explain the diagnosis and treatment of OA pain. Go to the Cat OA Pain checklist quiz here: https://bit.ly/OAChecklist

If you think your cat is slowing down and possibly dealing with pain from arthritis, give us a call at (605) 741-8008. We are happy to get you scheduled or answer any questions you might have.
