About 300 dog-handler search teams responded to 9/11, but only about 100 were prepared for the size of the disaster at Ground Zero.

Did you know that approximately 300 dogs worked at ground zero following the events of 9/11? These dogs were specially trained by FEMA to use their incredible sense of smell to look for not only those who were unfortunately killed, but also survivors.

There were also 2 Guide Dogs present in the towers on September 11th who guided not only their handlers, but dozens of other people to safety.

Another common myth people have about dogs is that their personality and behavior is determined solely by how they are brought up as puppies. This is untrue, there is a 14 week window in the beginning of a puppies life called the Critical Socialization Period. During this time, dogs are at their most impressionable and the experiences they have during this time can determine a lot about their future. It is important that puppies under 14 weeks of age have a variety of positive experiences with the world around them. This is the “nurture” aspect of how they will behave as adults.

However, even this does not determine the whole outcome of the dog’s personality and behavior. Their genetic makeup determines a great deal as well. Dogs have been selectively bred for certain purposes for thousands of years, these purposes range from hunting and police work to companionship. Think about the behavioral and personality differences between a Shih Tzu and a German Shepherd. One was bred to sit on the laps of royalty and the other was bred to herd livestock. What the dog was originally bred for will tell you a lot about the things they will enjoy doing in the future. A breed’s genetic traits can sometimes cause trouble for unprepared owners. For example, a family brings home a tiny terrier mix from the shelter only to find him digging holes in their backyard and bringing dead mice inside. They are mortified and trying to get it to stop, all the while Scrappy is having a blast.

This just goes to show that training and socialization is just ONE very important piece of the puzzle. A dog’s genetic inclinations are also going to be a large piece of who he is!

One of the oldest myths about dogs is that they should do what we ask simply because we asked and that they should want to make us happy. Have you ever tried to stop your dog from doing something like chasing a squirrel or barking at the neighbors walking by and they seemed to "ignore" you?

Dogs, as well as most other living beings, do things that are rewarding to them in some way. Chasing a squirrel or 'protecting their home" is instinctual and therefore highly rewarding to your dog. This means that in order to get your dog to listen to what you are asking you need to be more rewarding than the environment around them.

If you'd like to begin learning how to become more rewarding to your dog, send me a message. I'd love to help!
