✨Polk The Pug✨

- Polk might have an a**l gland adenocarcinoma but we’re not gonna be the ones to tell him. As far as he knows, we are just strange humans who examine him all over, feed him treats, perform re**al exams, take cute pictures of him, and maybe pinch him with a needle every now and then. BUT -louder for the people in the back- mostly he just remembers the treats! And he loves to dictate the speed at which they are given to him with a bossy bark (because humans need structure and discipline duhh). Polk also gets treat at home, filled with secret chemotherapy meds (Cytoxan & Palladia) that are shrinking his a**l gland tumor!!! He gets them formulated especially for him from a special pharmacy that ships them to his door (like Barkbox but for chemo? LOL) Even though he is taking oral chemotherapy, it’s okay to give him a big sloppy kiss at the kissing booth -with consent- and only if there’s a treat involved ❤️

Dr McNeill’s office has the perfect lighting so we took advantage of it for these adorable pictures ❤️

This itty bitty had an oral mass that was biopsied confirming Melanoma — she was being treated with Melanoma vaccines every 2 weeks (4 vaccines in total) she took those vaccines like a champ every time! She didn’t let that oral mass ruin her beautiful smile ☺️
~~The vaccine itself targets the pigment protein in melanoma cells and trains the immune system to kill those cancer cells. ~~

✨ Like your favorite photo of her ✨

✨Wise words from Dr. Justin Ganjei himself: “Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor we see in dogs. It is a very aggressive bone cancer with a high potential to spread but also causes significant discomfort to the patient as it destroys the bone. We see it more frequently in large and giant breed dogs (Great Danes, Greyhounds, Mastiffs, etc. My own personal dog had it. The typical treatment is amputation of the limb and chemotherapy. Most dogs tolerate amputation of a limb very well, but sometimes there are situations where we feel that amputation may not be tolerated. In those situations we have to think of how to treat the primary tumor without amputation. Pain medications alone don’t usually control the pain well enough. Radiation therapy is one option, but also carries the risk of eventual fracture of the bone as the tumor progresses. In certain situations we can perform limb-salvage surgery, where we remove the affected portion of bone with the tumor and a margin of normal bone to reduce the risk of recurrence. These procedures are effective at getting rid of the tumor and discomfort, while allowing the patient to still have a limb to use. However, they have potential for high complications (infection, implant issues).”
Unfortunately for Logan here, our beautiful giant, amputation is not in his books as he has arthritis in his rear end and his osteosarcoma is on his front right limb (you can see the tumor in his picture with Pluto). Logan is currently getting treated with Carboplatin + Radiation and does not need any sedation (which means we do not have to struggle with his 160lb self because obviously he would win lol 😂 )

This little handsome fella went to primary and was suspected to have Glaucoma. His eye was completely swollen shut until today (just in time for his consult with Dr Adkins!)

~~Glaucoma is an eye disease where by the pressure within the eye becomes elevated. It can be painful and can lead to blindness as well~~

Dr Adkins, Dr Marchel and her team officially diagnosed Chou Chou with Glaucoma by using the Tonometer (the blue pen) — his eye pressure was a high of 51; it should normally be between 15-25. Dr Adkins also checked his right eye to see if his angle was blocked which it was, meaning that it is very likely that the disease can be spread into his right eye as well. As of today, he was sent home with medication to help with the pain and lower the pressure but he is currently blind in his left eye, poor baby.

10/19/2021

Veterinary Technican Week is the perfect time to bring attention to this glaring inequity. We absolutely have to commit ourselves to making the veterinary technician profession one that is viable in terms of financial compensation and benefits. They represent the single most essential component of what we do as veterinary professionals, yet we too often reward their compassion and dedication with inadequate pay, paltry support for CE, and insufficient opportunities for advancement. Please join the Hope Center in voicing your support for a foundational change.

Scott Moore, VMD
Medical Director

While we want to celebrate with funny memes, it just feels wrong when this is the reality.

We appreciate the hard work and education it takes to be a vet tech, and it is beyond time practice owners and corporations start running their businesses in a way that gives them an actual living wage.

Because otherwise we won’t have any vet techs left to celebrate as they continue to burn out and leave the field. 🥺

If you live outside the US, is it the same in your country?

There is no single aspect of what we do at the Hope Center that would be possible without the unwavering and tireless dedication of our veterinary technicians. They are truly the backbone of everything we do for our patients and we thank our lucky stars we are fortunate enough to work by their side. Though we take this week to acknowledge them, they deserve our deepest appreciation and respect each and every day of the year. A huge thank you to you all. You inspire us!

Today we start to celebrate the veterinary technicians that care for our pets. It is one week were we show our appreciation to the best of our ability. Sometimes there just aren’t the right words, but do your best this week if you go to the vet, or happen to know a vet tech. Send a card, an email, or a treat to celebrate this over worked, under paid, group of people that care for your precious pets. ❤️

This post might be a bit long but is definitely worth reading!🐶🐱

Thank You Hope Team You Guys are Amazing! 💫

This is an example of why we in the ER might not be able to see your pet right away, and why we may even need to ask you to call other area vet clinics as you seek care for your pet.

The dog on the left is having a pericardial tap performed to remove the blood that has accumulated in the sac that surrounds the heart. He is being attended by a cardiology tech, two Internal Medicine techs and two ICU doctors.

The dog on the right is suffering from gastric dilation, an abnormal accumulation of gas in his stomach that is extremely painful. The ICU doctor is working on passing a tube into his stomach to help release the gas. Helping her are a surgery tech, two ICU techs and a second ICU doctor.

The ICU tech taking this pic helped to make sure each patient was adequately stable before heading to a computer to finalize charges and discharges for a pet that had been hit by a car several days ago and was finally getting to go home.

Three hours later, both dogs were out of immediate danger and were able to rest comfortably in their cages.

So, if we unfortunately have to tell you that we cannot see your pet right now and we’d like you to seek care elsewhere, we are as heartbroken as you are that we cannot accommodate your sick pet. We have even had to refer some clients to emergency clinics in Gaithersburg or Clarksburg, MD! We completely understand that spending an hour in the car with your pet getting to the vet can be frightening when they are ill or hurt but we really just want to help you get the best, and the most timely, care you can. 🐾🏩

Love Them Deeply. Keep Them Healthy. Just like people, pets have varied and complicated ailments that may require emergency or specialty care. The Hope Advanced Veterinary Center offers Fairfax County and Northern Virginia pet owners 24/7 emergency pet care and board-certified veterinary specialists...

Dr.Moore is our wonderful Medical Director here at Hope. He wanted to share some cute details about his dogs Pepite and Rousseau!!

"Hard to believe these two fetching Frenchies are related! Pepite is bookish , sweet and as quiet as a mouse. Rousseau is the daredevil, loud and rambunctious, always looking for a tug-of-war match or taking your ears off. When not snoozing on her favorite lounging pillow, little sister is always helping out. She likes to assist with kitchen prep, opening bags and bringing the goods to you, as well as walking the dog. If not within sight, big brother is testing his Ninja Warrior skills running the gauntlet. There isn’t an obstacle he can’t overcome from flying over the couch to get to the door, skateboarding down the steps, to slithering under the couch…until his size catches up with him and he gets stuck. And that’s because of Pepite’s super power, squeezing into tight spaces and luring in her prey. Rousseau’s athleticism gives him extra strength, allowing him to eat toxic mushrooms and live. "
