Meet Kate. She is about 8 years old and came from a home with seven other cockatiels. She gets along with other birds, is social, but a little cautious right now as the shelter is a new experience for her. She came to us in search of a new home because her owner had passed away.

CLEAR THE SHELTERS - Week 3
More matching funds are available! Beginning at noon today, and are once again matching donations. The two shelters who receive the highest number of individual gifts during the next week, 8/27 to 9/2, regardless of donation size, will each receive $5k grants from The Animal Rescue Site.

MEET OUR MACAWS
Here's a short tour of the macaw area. They were moderately cooperative, but as they had already eaten, I suppose I might have been interrupting nap time!

ADOPTED!
While we will miss Yogi, we are very happy he has been adopted. Yogi, a Blue Crown Conure, has been a resident of the shelter for several years and is a favorite of many of our volunteers. He enjoys bathtime, dance time, and will bark like a dog. He does a good dog impression! When Yogi first arrived at the shelter, he was shy and didn't want to interact with visitors. Over time, our volunteers worked with him and he became more approachable.

NEW ARRIVAL
Gizmo is a feisty 4-year-old female budgie. She enjoys swinging in her coconut shell and is quite active. She has tried to open her doors and "escape" several times! She is not hand tame, but according to her previous home, she enjoys the company of other budgies and lived with 2 others before they passed away. Her owners did not want to add more birds to their home, and felt Gizmo was lonely as a single.

Our Green Singer Finch has been adopted and is settling in at his new home. He is an active, acrobatic little guy and is a close relative of the canary.

NEW ARRIVALS
We have a new group of cockatiels that are available for adoption. They range in age from about 10 to 20 years, and all came from the same home. They are not bonded and can be adopted inidividually or in multiples. They are social and get along with the other birds. We will be posting photos and details on each of them during the next week.

RECENT ARRIVAL
Meet Bobby and Holly. They are a bonded pair of amazons that have lived together for many years. Bobby is a 40-year-old Double Yellow Head and Holly is a 28-year-old Blue Front.

The pair can be quite entertaining and will talk and laugh with you. They love to take showers from the spray bottle. They are nice birds, but Bobbly can be protective of Holly. Bobby takes medication daily, but will happily take it on a piece of multi-grain bread. Of course, if you are giving Bobbly a treat, you also need to give Holly a tiny piece of bread too!

NEW ARRIVAL
Skittles was found outside a couple of months ago. After searching lost pet sites, the finder was unable to locate an owner. So Skittles came to us in search of a new home.

ADOPTED!
Cece is an older female canary. She has arthritis and a previously broken, and now healed, wing. She takes Metacam once a day for pain/inflammation.

Cece came to us through another shelter and from a home that could no longer care for their birds. Unfortunately, we don't have any other background info on her.

NEW ARRIVAL
Plumpy is a 2-year-old male cockatiel. He likes people, enjoys head scratches, and knows how to fly. If he doesn't want to be bothered, he will let you know!

Plumpy lived with another bird who has since passed away. Plumpy's owner's situation has changed and is not in a position to take on more birds or spend much time with him, so Pumpy came to us to find new friends and a new home.

ADOPTED
Tiny is a 9-year-old Pacific Parrotlet. He is a little bird with a big personality. He loves people and enjoys scritches and beak rubs. Tiny loves to fly and is very active. He needs both out-of-cage time and at minimum a small flight cage. Because of his size, he needs supervision when out!

Tiny eats a healthy diet of Harrison's and chop, and loves corn, quinoa, and oranges. He likes to sleep in his pineapple or on his swing. Tiny was well-loved but came to the shelter when his owner became ill and could no longer care for him.

RECENT ARRIVAL
Charly is a 7-year-old Indian Ringneck. She is a shy bird and can be hesitant around new people. A favorite treat like an almond can usually lure her to the front of the cage.

Charly is accustomed to being out most of the day, can fly, but enjoys lounging on the top of her cage. She eats a healthy diet of Harrison's and chop, but fresh corn on the cobb is one of her favorites! She loves playing with her wood toys and likes to sleep on her swing. Charly was well-loved but came to the shelter when her owner became ill and could no longer care for her.

We are again participating in "Clear the Shelters," a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign spearheaded by NBCUniversal Local.

This Saturday, August 10th, we will be at the Petco in Elmhurst on RT 83 from 11am to 3pm. We will be available to talk about our birds and answer questions about adoption.

ADOPTED!
Parrotlets Sprite and Gumball have been adopted. They are a bonded pair and needed to be adopted together. They are active, fiesty little birds, and with two will be twice the fun! Here they are in their carrier ready to go to their new home.

ADOPTED!
Farley has been adopted. He moved to his new home this week where he has a Quaker friend eager to meet him.

Farley was a fugitive from Wisconsin, where it is currently illegal to own a quaker. He is around 12 years old, but little else is known about his history, as he was brought to us by a humane society group from Wisconsin after his former owner passed away.

IN MEMORIAM...
We are saddened to announce that Boomer has passed away and is now flying free and strong over the rainbow bridge.

Boomer was a resident of the shelter for several years and dearly loved by the volunteers. She was friendly, enjoyed people, and loved scritches and cuddles. She was only in her early thirties, but already had severe liver and heart disease. She was taking several medications and was placed on a healthy diet, but it was not enough to prevent her continued decline. She was hospitalized again last week, but had a seizure and could not be revived.

NEW ARRIVAL
Sunny and Moonlight are a pair of almost 2-year-old budgies that were surrendered when their family was moved and did not take them along. We were not given much information about them. They are curious and somewhat friendly. Sunny was interested in the camera when I approached to take their photo. Moonlight was a little more cautious. With a little patience and training, they could become hand tame.

FEATURE
Lovebird Peaches is still searching for a home. Her previous family surrendered her to the shelter when her mate passed away. She is cheerful and not afraid of people, but is fearful of hands and can be a bit nippy. She is looking for someone with the patience to work with her, or another lovebird friend for her to be with. She is about 7 years old.

NEW ARRIVAL
Budgies Yerb and Stan are brother and sister. They are about 4 years old and have always been housed together. They are a little skittish around hands, but do like to come out of the cage for some flight and play time. They came to the shelter seeking a new home when their owner could not take them with her when she moved to college.

ADOPTED!

Birdie, a Rainbow Lorikeet, has been adopted! Birdie enjoyed coming out of her cage and interacting with volunteers. She was quite the singer, whistler, mimicker and talker. She also loved splashing in her bath bowl. We will miss her but wish her well at her new home and with her new family!

NEW ARRIVAL
Meet Bob! Bob was found last month in a backyard. The finder searched for several weeks and could not find an owner, so he was surrendered to the shelter. We continued to look for an owner while Bob was in new bird quarantine. No owner has been found, so Bob had his vet check and is now available for adoption and looking for a new home.

Blueberry was adopted last week. He is an older budgie whose mate recently passed away. Here he is in his new home where he has a new budgie friend. His new family says they are getting along well and are enjoying their flight cage.

SHOWER TIME

WE LOVE TAKING SHOWERS! Bobby and Holly, a bonded pair of amazons, are enjoying a shower this morning. They are new arrivals and will be in quarantine for a couple of weeks before being made available for adoption. We will post more information on them when they are ready to see visitors. #adoptdontshop #amazonparrot

Mr T Update

Mr T! Some of you will remember Mr T, aka Trouble, the double yellow head amazon from the hoarding situation a year and a half ago. At the time of the rescue, we weren't sure he would survive after being without food or water for several days. Thanks to our vet and his foster home, he is doing well. He has now starting climbing, is much more active, and is ready for a larger cage. Without the generous donations of our followers to help with his medical bills, we would not have been able to save him. Here is Mr T a few minutes after we found him. Polly Dances

IT'S DAY 3 OF GIVING DUPAGE Polly offered to provide some entertainment and gives us a little dance. A little bit about Polly. Her full name is Polly Anne. She is about 32 years old and is a Blue & Gold Macaw. She’ll say “hi!” “What ya doin?” and “Polly’s a good girl”. She loves almonds, grapes, apples and string beans. Polly belonged to an older couple, but was mostly the husband's bird. She has not been around children. She seems to prefer men. After her owner passed away, she was brought to the shelter. She was very shy and not very active. We could tell she was grieving the loss of her home and her owner. It took over a year for her to adjust and begin to interact with our volunteers. She is now coming out of her cage, talks, and dances. Polly is available for adoption. If you are interested in meeting her, submit an application. Berry Singing

IT'S DAY 2 OF GIVING DUPAGE Berry offered to provide the entertainment and sing opera for us. A little bit about Berry. Her full name is Strawberry. She is a Greenwing Macaw around 25 years old. She keeps us on our toes here at the shelter, and always surprises us with something new. She’ll bark, oink, and quack, and occasionally call “Ma!” She'll ask for "water, water, water," but what she really wants is a bath. She’ll also say “come here” and ask you for a “cracker”, which actually means nut. And she’ll tell you she’s a “pretty bird”, as if we couldn’t tell! Berry’s primary owner was a male, so she seems to have a slight preference for men, although she does well with females, too. Berry is available for adoption. SHELTER TOUR - 2024 Giving DuPage Days As promised, here is a quick tour of the shelter. Giving DuPage Days started today and runs through Friday. We are raising funds to help pay for overhead such as rent and building maintenance, food and supplies for the birds, and medical care. We are 100% doner supported and all our workers are volunteers. Clear The Shelters 2024

A few weeks ago, NBC featured Greater Chicago Bird Shelter during an early morning newscast. Joanne and Marietta represented the shelter and brought along a few birds. The 2024 Clear the Shelters campaign will run later this summer in August. It is a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign that helps find loving homes for animals in need. #adoptdontshop

Mr T Talking

This is Mr. T a/k/a Trouble, the amazon that was rescued from the home with the many cockatiels. He has made amazing progress! When we found him, he was barely alive and had not food or water for several days. The owner was ill and unable to care for her birds. Thanks to the generousity of our doners and volunteers, we were able to get him the medical attention he needed. Next Tuesday, November 28th, is #GivingTuesday. We will be participating to raise money for the shelter; medical costs are one of our greatest expenses. #GivingTuesday #parrots #adoptdontshop

Happy Dancing

"Happy" Parakeet was adopted this past week. He will join an existing budgie at his new home. At the shelter, he was an active little guy, always tapping his bells or chatting to his mirror. Within a couple of days, he was already dancing and playing.

Yogi - Conure

FEATURE Yogi is a blue-crowned conure, about 29 years old. When he first arrived at the shelter, he was very shy and did not want to come out and interact with us. Over time, he gained the trust of our volunteers and his personaltiy began to show. He enjoys bathtime, likes to dance, and might say hi or bark when you say hello to him. Marvin

ADOPTION UPDATE Marvin, blue-front Amazon, was adopted earlier this week. He was not fond of the shelter, and is happy to be in his new home. Here he is watching the video tour of the shelter and making some comments about it!

She also loves baths! Birdie would do best in a home with lorikeet experience, or someone willing to spend time with her to learn how to care for a Lorikeet's special needs. Lorikeets are nectar eating birds that require a special diet. They are also extremely messy and require near constant cleaning.
