Community Cat Outdoor Shelter

Provide shelter for your Community Cat to protect them from inclement weather. This could include keeping a garage door cracked or a simple shelter like noted. See the video in the comment section for a walkthrough.

We recommend only using straw as it dries without molding. Duct tape the outside of the box as well. Check local pet stores, medical clinics or a seafood seller for coolers they are discarding. Home Depot & Lowes also have stryfoam, etc for sale too.

You may include a second hole on the other side of the box so cats don't feel trapped and are more likely to use the shelter.

Items needed:
- Rubbermaid tote (18 gallon)
- Styrofoam Cooler or styrofoam
- Straw (available at Feed stores)
- Duct Tape
- Utility knife
- Optional: Hair dryer or heat gun help soften the totes for cutting.

What a horrible story but an important one to read.

What a horrible story but an important one to read.

Sadly, it was a few days before this devastated family found their beautiful missing kitten who had suffocated in a Tidy Cats litter bin. Camille Anaya writes, “We thought our 8 month old kitten Rose escaped out the front door on the 22nd. We looked everywhere in the house first before we began our search outside. Unfortunately, today my husband went to change the litter box and found her curled up in the litter bin. We think it must have happened while I was at work because I saw her that morning and when we searched the house that evening we never heard her making sounds. This was a horrible and heartbreaking discovery and I wish to bring more awareness to this.
This was the first time we ever purchased this type of litter and we had never heard of such a thing happening. Yes, please share my story and I will do my part to help bring awareness, too. I don’t want anyone else to go through this. I appreciate your kind words and what you are doing to bring awareness.”

Cats are often drawn to warm enclosed and small places which can include bins, plastic containers, and appliances like washers and dryers. Their agility and flexibility allows them to easily jump on and into spaces they can hide away in. Please share in honor of young Rose. Thank you.

COLD WEATHER REMINDER!!!

As the outdoor temperatures start to drop, cats will hide under car hoods for protection and warmth.

Use caution when you start your car in the cold winter months ahead. If cats are left outside, they may climb under the car hood for protection from the cold. Before you climb into your car, slap the hood or open it for a quick look around.

Acorns contain a toxic principle called Gallotannin. In cows and horses who repeatedly ingest significant amounts, we have seen severe gastrointestinal irritation, depression and kidney damage. Dogs, however, generally do not forage on acorns as livestock do — and even if they do ingest several acorns, it is usually an acute (single) exposure, not a chronic situation. In these cases, we typically only see mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset, which can include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. However, there is also the potential for mechanical irritation (from the sharp fragmented pieces of acorn), and possible obstruction, should a large amount of acorn material become lodged in the GI tract.

📢 Speak 📢 up for animals trapped on cruel chinchilla fur farms in Romania!

These farms are a complete horror for animals—young animals are confined in small, dirty wire cages for their entire life, female chinchillas are forced to regularly reproduce.

What’s the most common cause of heatstroke in dogs? If you said “being in a hot car”, you’d be mistaken. 75% of cases of heatstroke are caused by exercising on a hot day.
Tomorrow is going to be a scorcher, so, as well as not leaving your dog in a hot car, it’s vital that you avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day, and stick to times when it’s cooler, such as early morning or in the evening.
