Guess what? We have another gardening class this Saturday, and we couldn’t be more excited!

First off, it’s not just about learning how to grow plants. It’s about taking control of what our family eats. By growing our own food, we’re ensuring that we have fresh, healthy produce right at our fingertips. Plus, it’s a chance to understand and teach our family where our food comes from and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it.

But it’s not just practical stuff. Gardening can be very therapeutic! There’s just something about getting your hands dirty and spending some time outside, away from screens and stress. It’s like a little oasis of calm in the middle of our busy lives.

And here’s the best part: you’ll be part of a community of people who love gardening. We swap tips, share our successes and failures, and just geek out about gardening. It’s a great morning out in the garden!

Oh, and did I mention? We touch on everything from setting up a garden to knowing exactly when to harvest. It’s like a crash course in becoming the ultimate green thumb!
We’d love for you to come join us!

In agricultural settings, pollinators are invaluable allies. They are responsible for pollinating many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts that grace our tables. Studies have shown that farms with healthy pollinator populations often experience higher crop yields and improved quality of produce. By fostering habitats that attract pollinators, we not only support our farm’s productivity but also contribute to global food security.

🍓🌿 **Say No to Pesticides!** 🌿🍓

As we made our evening rounds, checking off tasks for the day, we couldn’t resist stopping to pick some strawberries and blueberries. They were absolutely delicious, but it also gave us pause to think. It’s disheartening to realize that most strawberries, even the organic ones, are filled with pesticides, impacting everyone’s health.

At Sand n Straw, we take immense pride in growing our fruit without any chemicals. We firmly believe that food should not only nourish the body but also the soul, without compromising on safety or environmental integrity. Our fruits are cultivated in harmony with nature, free from harmful residues and synthetic additives.

Join us in embracing the chemical-free movement and making informed decisions about the food you eat. Together, we can create a future where fresh, nutritious, chemical-free produce is accessible to everyone.

Clear the Debris: Bid farewell to winter remnants and clear away any debris that’s accumulated in your beds. Give your plants some breathing room to stretch their roots!
Amend the Soil: Treat your soil like royalty by adding compost and fertilizer to replenish its nutrients. Think of it as a spa day for your plants – they’ll thank you with lush growth!

🌱🌞 Ready to bring your garden to life this spring/summer? It’s all about choosing the right seeds! 🌻 Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, here are some tips for selecting the perfect seeds:
Know Your Zone: Identify your USDA Hardiness Zone or your local climate zone. This helps you understand which plants thrive in your area’s temperature and weather conditions.
Research Varieties: Look for seed varieties that are well-suited to your zone. Consider factors like average temperature, humidity, and frost dates to ensure successful germination and growth.
Read Seed Descriptions: Pay attention to seed packets or online descriptions. They often provide valuable information about a plant’s specific needs, such as sunlight requirements, soil type, and water preferences.
Consider Space and Time: Evaluate your garden space and the length of your growing season. Choose seeds that fit your available space and time frame, whether you’re planting in containers, raised beds, or directly in the ground.
Quality Matters: Invest in high-quality seeds from reputable sources. Quality seeds are more likely to germinate reliably and produce strong, healthy plants.
Experiment with Native Plants: Incorporate native plant species into your garden. They are adapted to your region’s ecosystem and often require less maintenance, water, and fertilizer.
Start Small: If you’re new to gardening, start with a few easy-to-grow varieties. As you gain experience, you can expand your garden and experiment with different plants.
Let’s sow the seeds of success together and watch our gardens thrive! 🌿✨

Calling all Young Pioneers! 🌟 Join us as we embark on a fascinating journey beneath the surface of the soil to discover the magical world of mycelium networks! 🌿✨

Did you know that beneath our feet lies a vast interconnected web of fungi, working tirelessly to support plant life and maintain the balance of our ecosystem?

Imagine you’re part of a gigantic game of telephone, but instead of passing whispers from ear to ear, we’re passing messages underground, through a hidden network called the mycelium!

First, picture a forest filled with trees, plants, and mushrooms. 🌳🍄 When a tree needs something—let’s say it’s thirsty—it sends a message through its roots. But instead of sending a text, it’s like a special chemical signal!

Now, here’s where the mycelium comes in. It’s like a superhighway underground, made of tiny threads called hyphae, connecting everything together. When the tree sends its message, the mycelium picks it up and delivers it to other trees or plants in need. It’s like a nature-made communication system!

But wait, there’s more! Mycelium also helps plants share nutrients, like a giant food delivery service. 🥦🚚 It forms partnerships with plants and fungi, trading nutrients for sugars, making sure everyone in the forest gets what they need to thrive.

So, think of mycelium as nature’s ultimate telephone line, connecting all living things underground, sharing messages, nutrients, and keeping the whole forest in harmony! 🌿📞 Let’s marvel at the wonders of this hidden network right beneath our feet!

Comment ‘telephone game’ for tips on how to explain to the kiddos!

Chamomile muffins

In Young Pioneers we made Chamomile Muffins.  They were a huge hit with all the kids!  What do you think of when you think of chamomile?  Relaxation! Yes, chamomile is often regarded as a relaxing herb. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine as a natural remedy for promoting relaxation and relieving stress.

Chamomile muffins are a delightful twist on traditional muffins, infusing the soothing flavor of chamomile into a sweet baked treat.  Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a comforting afternoon snack. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature, and feel free to add any additional mix-ins like chopped nuts!

Ingredients

Serves 12

3 chamomile tea bags (steeped in warm milk)
½ cup of choice milk (we used coconut milk)
2 tbsp of avocado oil
2 tbsp of brown sugar
½ cup of honey
1 egg, beaten
1 ½ banana, mashed
1 cup of whole wheat flour
2 tsp of baking powder
Dash of salt

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 24 mini muffin cups with nonstick spray; set aside.

2. Cut strings off tea bags and place bags in a medium saucepan. Add milk and 1/2 cup honey. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes. Remove tea bags; set tea aside.

3. Combine flour, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Make a well in center of flour mixture; set aside.

4. Combine milk and honey mixture, egg, banana, and oil; add all at once to flour mixture. Stir until just moistened; batter will still be lumpy.

5. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups, filling each half to two-thirds full.

6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

🌿✨ Let’s chat about some wholesome hair care straight from the farm! 🌿✨

We are all trying to reduce chemicals we use in our households. I tried Rosemary Hair Rinse a few months back and it has become a weekly luxury I truly miss when I skip a week! 🚿🌹💆‍♀️

Rosemary’s not just a herb for the kitchen; it’s a true-blue friend to your hair! Here’s why it’s my go-to:

✨ Encourages Hair Growth: Rosemary stirs up circulation in your scalp.

✨ Nourishes Follicles: With its earthy antioxidants, rosemary gives your hair follicles a cozy hug, keeping them strong.

✨ Soothes the Scalp: Rosemary’s got soothing vibes that calm down any scalp woes.

✨ Enhances Shine: With a touch of rosemary, your hair will shimmer and shine like the sun dancin’ on a dewy mornin’ – naturally!

Ready to bring a bit of farm-fresh goodness into your routine? Here’s how it’s done:

1️⃣ Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and turn off burner.
2️⃣ Toss in a handful of rosemary and cover for 15-30 minutes (if you forget about it, don’t worry I always do)
3️⃣ Strain out the rosemary, let cool and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
4️⃣ After your usual wash and conditioner routine, pour the at rosemary infusion all over your hair and wrap in a towel letting it soak in. I leave it in and style my hair as usual, but you can rinse it out if you choose.

Say hello to happy, healthy hair! Share your thoughts below and don’t forget to tag a friend who needs a little farm-fresh loving in their hair care routine! 👇

Not sure where we found this recipe, as I found it in my stack of recipes, ripped it out of a magazine at some point. This recipe is not only beautiful, filled with bright colors, but it is simple to make and very flavorful! Not sure why we waited so long, but it will definitely be kept in our recipe rotations moving forward. We added ground beef to complete the meal, it would work nicely with other proteins or a flavorful side dish to share.

Ingredients

1 butternut squash
Olive oil, to taste
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 avocados
Cherry tomatoes, about ½ a basket, quartered
1 bunch of basil, torn
Smoked mozzarella, cubed

Peel, seed and cube butternut squash. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper tossing well. Arrange cubes in a single layer and roast at 425 degrees for 20 minutes or until squash is tender and golden brown.

Meanwhile, cut up avocados, tomatoes, basil and mozzarella. Toss with butternut squash adding more salt, pepper and/or olive oil if so desired and serve at room temperature.

Hope you enjoy!

02/22/2024

Getting seedlings started now will speed up your Spring & Summer gardens.  If you don’t have a greenhouse to start seedlings in, try a windowsill in your house or investing in a mini greenhouse to get started.  Here are some steps to help you get started:

1. Choose the right containers: Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good organic potting soil.  We use either EB Stone or Kellogg organic potting soil.  Make sure the containers have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

2.Select your seeds: Choose seeds that are appropriate for the current season and your local climate. How do you know?  Read the back of the seed package.

3.Plant your seeds: Follow the instructions on the seed packet for planting depth and spacing. Moisten the potting mix before planting the seeds to ensure good contact between the seeds and the soil.

4. Maintain proper temperature and humidity: Keep the temperature in the greenhouse within the optimal range for the seeds you’re growing.

5. Water regularly: Keep the potting soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

6.Monitor for pests and diseases: Keep an eye out for any signs of pests or diseases, such as yellowing leaves or wilting seedlings. Address any issues promptly to prevent them from spreading.

7. Transplant seedlings: Once your seedlings have developed true leaves and outgrown their starter containers, transplant them into larger pots or directly into the garden if the weather permits.

8. Harden off seedlings: Before transplanting seedlings outdoors, gradually expose them to outdoor conditions over a period of about a week to acclimate them to the change in environment.

By following these steps, you can successfully get your seedlings started in the greenhouse and set the stage for a fun and productive growing season!

Hello From Rich & April

We are the Viles, the heart and soul of Sand & Straw Community Farm. We came up with the name Sand n’ Straw Community Farm as we wanted to keep our beach roots while venturing out into country life.

When we first decided to start a garden, we bought boysenberry, raspberry and blueberry plants. Not knowing any better, we put them together only to learn that they required different planting methods. While we failed on our first gardening attempt, the important thing is we started. Rich’s brother was subsequently diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer. We watched helplessly as he suffered radically sparking a desire to research our diet. We had been that competitive sports family, eating out far too much constantly on the go, not paying much attention to our diet or what it was doing to our family.

A change had to be made. Rich left his employment to attend farm school and we both enrolled in permaculture design courses. Our house became our gardening training ground. During this time, we visited farms throughout California and Oregon talking to farmers, learning ideas that worked or didn’t work as we continued to look for our niche in the world of hobby farms.

In 2018, we purchased a 6-acre farm in Vista, California where we are taking Sand n Straw Community Farm to the next level. Using regenerative agriculture practices, we are creating a sustainable farm that will provide for our family and open the door to our community, letting us share fresh, locally grown food with others.
