As many of you know, I have been a veterinary technician for 11 years. 8 of those years, I've been certified in fear-free and low-stress handling techniques. I’ve done significant research in behavior and spoken to board-certified Veterinary Behaviorists. That being said, I’d like to talk about advocating for your pet. More specifically, at the veterinarians office. Being an advocate for your pet at the vet, and of course in day-to-day situations, is part of our responsibility as pet owners. It’s crucial to their mental well-being and comfort. They can easily become stressed, fearful, and anxious in unfamiliar environments, showing signs ranging anywhere from mild to severe. By understanding their needs and communicating effectively with your vet staff, you CAN make the experience as positive as possible. Your dog is allowed to say they're uncomfortable with something! Here are a few tips to help you contribute to a more effective and efficient vet visit.

1. Create a calm environment leading up to the appointment. Maybe play some calming music in the car on the way over ( yes, they actually have stations for reducing anxiety in pets) Also, if your veterinarian has prescribed anxiolytics/sedatives to be given before their appointment, PLEASE give them. It creates a better experience for your pet, yourself, and the veterinary staff.

2. Bring their favorite toy or treats. I also recommend having your dog wear a bandana sprayed with Adaptil, and a towel sprayed with Feliway over your cats carrier.

3. Express your concerns clearly.
Be upfront about any concerns you have regarding your pet’s behavior and explain what their triggers are.

4. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and politely request gentle handling. If your pet prefers to have blood drawn from a back leg or if they don’t like being touched in a certain spot, etc, communicate those things to your vet.

5. Use positive reinforcement to encourage calm behavior. Praise, treats, and patience can go a long way in making the experience less stressful. If you feel your pet would benefit from anxiolytics for their next appointment, don’t be afraid to speak up!

6. Ask for simple procedures to be done in the exam room with you present, as most pets are more comfortable with you there. For example, blood draws, ear cleanings, nail trims, etc. Now, there ARE exceptions to that! There are things that cannot be done in the exam room, such as cystocentesis (sterile urine collection). There are also some pets that do better away from their owners, believe it or not.

A strong relationship with your veterinarian is important and can make future visits more comfortable for you and your pet. Open communication, trust, and mutual respect are key to ensuring your baby receives the best care possible. Remember, your pets rely on you to be their voice, so please make sure it’s heard.

Do you advocate for your pet at the vet? If so, please share your experiences!

I can't let September pass without mentioning that it's . Being a veterinary technician certified in pain management, it's something that I'm very passionate about.
Most animals are incredibly stoic, so unless theyre in excruciating pain, they won't cry out. Be on the lookout for the following behaviors and signs your pet may be experiencing discomfort, and contact your veterinarian to discuss the abundance of options we now have to keep our babies more comfortable 😊

Good morning!😊
Bill and I have been waiting to share some big news with all of you, and today is the day❗️.........

We will be moving to Pine Bush in about 4-6 weeks, depending on how quickly the closing process goes. 🏠 The new house has a large fully fenced in yard that the pups are going to absolutely love! We also have a large partially finished basement which we hope to eventually convert into a beautiful additional space for our boarding dogs! We will continue to be a kennel free "home away from home" for our clients dogs whom we've come to love "like our own", as well as new friends we meet along the way ❀️🐾❀️

We worked with our realtor for MONTHS to ensure we were as close as possible to our existing clients. However, we may unfortunately find that a few may be just out of our service area. In those cases, we are going to work as hard as possible to continue to care for their pets in one form or another. The majority of our existing clients and their pets will not be effected.
We can't begin to express how grateful and blessed we are to have such amazing and supportive clients, many who have turned into friends, and their fur-babies! πŸ₯°
Please feel free to reach out with any concerns or questions you may have. We're happy to discuss these with you.
