Hill's Pet Food Company offered a matching program for the Waseca County Animal Humane Society in conjunction with their Holiday Giving Tree program this year. Thanks to the generosity of our clients and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, we were able to load just over 600 pounds of high quality pet food for WCAHS! Thank you all!! Pictured are WCHAS board members Dede Barton and RaeLynn Barbknecht!

Posting for Facebook regarding K9 Respiratory Disease

An apparent increase in cases of K9 respiratory disease has attracted much attention in the news and social media. Last Thursday Trupanion Pet Insurance sponsored a webinar with a panel of veterinary infectious disease experts to discuss what is known regarding this outbreak.

The disease may or may not be caused by a new organism, including the one detected in New Hampshire. This disease outbreak may be caused by the pathogens we have been dealing with for years, including Bordetella, Parainfluenza virus and K9 Influenza virus.

Testing individual animals for these pathogens is expensive and not generally rewarding due to the time it takes to get results and the likelihood of getting false negative results.

As for treatment, Doxycycline still is the drug of choice for suspected bacterial infections, unless the dog is developing pneumonia or septicemia. Discussions regarding the use of Chloramphenicol (a very potent antibiotic with potential side effects) was based on 1 single case. It is not the recommended drug for this condition.

What are the current recommendations for dog owners:

1.) Ensure your dog is current on vaccinations for Bordetella and Parainfluenza (Kennel Cough). It takes ~ 10 days for them to develop protective immunity after vaccination.
2.) If you have a geriatric dog, especially one being treated for heart disease, or has respiratory issues like collapsing trachea, it is prudent to avoid large groups of dogs (boarding kennels, dog day care and dog parks).
3.) Normal healthy dogs that are current on their vaccinations are at a lower risk for developing this condition. Owners should use their own judgement in regard to activities that expose their pet to other dogs.

For the latest detailed information, dog owners can access the webinar at k9illness.trupanion.com
