Here at Commonwealth, we’re all about positivity! Who would be better to encourage that positivity to our students other than Dr. Nice and Dr. Good? Dr Good, a professor from Blue Ridge Community College, stopped by today to see the progress of our extern student Alexa. Alexa is a student in the Veterinary Technology program at Blue Ridge Community College. The program is a vigorous 2 year program to become a licensed veterinary technician. We asked Alexa, “What has been your favorite part about your extern so far?” She replied, “Finally using what I’ve learned in class and being able to apply the skills clinically in practice!” Giving injections to patients, taking radiographs, interpreting samples under the microscope, filling medications and communicating with clients are only just a few skills Alexa has used so far during her externship! Alexa will be externing with Commonwealth through July and then will return at Blue Ridge in the fall for her third semester!

Heartworm disease is a very serious disease in both dogs and cats. Heartworms are a type of round worm that live in the heart, but can also be found in the lungs and blood vessels of your pets. They can cause severe heart and lung disease and can be fatal if gone untreated. April is National Heartworm Awareness Month- the best time to learn more about preventing heartworms in your furry friends! How can your dog or cat contract heartworms? Heartworms can be transmitted from an already infected host like a dog, fox, coyote, or wolf containing female heartworms which produce microscopic baby worms called microfilaria. These baby worms circulate in an infected host’s blood stream, waiting to be transferred to their next host. When a mosquito bites your pet, this transfers the microfilaria to their blood stream, continuing the lifecycle of heartworms. It takes heartworm larvae 6 months to mature into adult heartworms and once mature they can grow up to 12 inches long and live in your dog or cat up to 7 years! Early stages of heartworm disease may not show any clinical signs. As the disease progresses, your dog may show signs of coughing, exercise intolerance, loss of appetite, weight loss. Progression in cats can lead to heartworm associated respiratory disease (HARD). Other clinical signs are weight loss, coughing, shortness of breath, vomiting, swelling in the abdomen or chest and fatigue. In severe cases, sudden death will occur. Although heartworm disease can be treated, treatment is not always effective and can leave your pet impaired for life. Heartworm treatment is a 6-12 month process, is very stressful to your pet, and is very costly to you. The best way to avoid your pet contracting heartworms is to test your pets yearly and to give prevention. Monthly and yearly preventions are options for your furry companions at Commonwealth! If you have questions about our products, call us today!

03/22/2024

March 17th-24th is National Animal Poison Prevention Week. This week Commonwealth would like to help educate owners on common products and plants that can be poisonous to your dog or cat.
1. Gum/sweet treats: some products like gum, mints, baked goods, some peanut butter can contain an ingredient called xylitol which is toxic to dogs. Toothpaste/mouth wash can also contain this ingredient. If your dog ingests xylitol, this can be life threatening due to profound drop in blood sugar. This can also cause liver failure. Remember, checking product's ingredients before offering to you dog will help avoid this and only brush your dog's teeth with veterinarian prescribed toothpaste!
2. Human medications: Human medications should not be given to any of your pets unless prescribed by your veterinarian. If you ever have any questions, please contact your regular vet.
3. Chocolate: any chocolate ingestion is not advised, but dark chocolate and baker's chocolate can be toxic to dogs due to the ingredient theobromine causing significant illness. Common clinical signs of chocolate ingestion is vomiting, diarrhea, panting and excessive urination. In severe cases, symptoms can include seizures and heart failure.
4. Fertilizer: fertilizer ingestion in both cats and dogs can be very harmful due to numerous ingredients. Remember, when spreading fertilizer on your lawns and gardens, place your animals inside so they are not in direct contact. If concentrated fertilizer is ingested, contact your vet immediately.
5. Rat Bait: rat bait poisoning can be both deadly for dogs and cats. If eaten directly or if a rat that has ingested rat bait is eaten by your pet, this can also be of concern. There are quite a few different types of rat baits. If you know your pet has ingested rat bait, bring your pet and the packaging to show to your veterinarian immediately.
6. Lilies: lilies, although beautiful and smell lovely, are not a flower you want your cat to get a hold of. Lilies in the "true lily" or the "daylily" family are very dangerous. Severe toxicity can lead to kidney failure.
Please contact the pet poison helpline at 855-764-7661 if unsure of toxicity ingestion.

“Acupuncture is one aspect of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) that focuses on restoring the energy balance in the body to promote healing. The technique requires the insertion of fine needles into the dog’s body at specified points, called acupuncture points, where nerves and blood vessels converge. Acupuncture can help treat a variety of diagnosis in your pet especially those related to arthritis, pain and weakness.”

Dr. Reynolds is a certified veterinary mixed animal acupuncturist. She did her training under Dr. Xie at the Chi University in Florida in 2021. Over the past few years she has treated many horses and dogs with acupuncture for a variety of ailments including behavior, anxiety, chronic pain, arthritis, back issues, EPM and other neurological deficits. If you’re interested more in acupuncture for your furry companion, call Commonwealth today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Reynolds!

Unfamiliar smells, noises, and animals are just a few things pets experience when going to any vet clinic. One of the first introductions your dog will have before being examined by a vet is getting weighed. This can be a scary experience for your dog if they have never been near or placed on a scale before. So, how can we make this a positive experience for you both? When introducing your dog to the scale, you can scatter their favorite treats near the scale to get them accustomed to it. Once they’re comfortable, you can then place treats on the scale, as pictured above, to encourage them to step on the scale. Another great distraction to use while standing on a scale is a lick mat. Peanut butter, non-fat Greek yogurt, frozen dog food or smashed fruits are just a few foods you can use on this. Placing this on the floor or wall near the scale while weighing your pet can encourage them to stand still and have a confident experience with the scale. At Commonwealth, we do encourage happy visits. You can stop by anytime during open business hours to help promote these effective ways to make the scale a not so scary place!
