First time breeding this lovely silver fox doe we purchased from Holistic Health and Home at the Farm right here in NH. Tough to see her nice silvering in this photo, but she’s stunning. More importantly, she’s a high quality rabbit.

I’ve only been raising meat rabbits for a few years and I still have a lot to learn. After getting to know Marie and her practices a bit, I decided to uplevel my meat rabbit game. So worth it.

We bred 5 does not knowing we’d have this massive heat wave. We have 2 proven does, 2 of our own young mixed does and this new doe from Marie.

Our proven does had small litters and we lost a couple from each mama.

One of our new does didn’t take.

The other new doe had 4, we lost 2 and then realized she wasn’t feeding them.

Juniper, our doe from Marie, has 6 healthy, fat babies. She is hot like the rest of us, but not stressed in this heat. She’s not only a great mama, but we gave her the 2 foster babies that she took and they are already looking healthier 24 hours later.

If you are raising rabbits or interested in getting started, it’s well worth getting rabbits from reputable breeders. I highly recommend Marie, we will be getting more breeding stock from her in the future.

Keep following along - I can’t wait to see how these babies grow!

This sweet mama has been sitting on eggs in a nest she made in our woodshed. 3 little chicks joined our farm in the best way possible. I love it that this is a place that our animals can do as nature intended:)

This lady is a black copper maran that we hatched last season. She hasn’t been named yet, but definitely deserves a special one. Who wants to help me name her?

Our first hatch of the year was really successful and those babies are now 14 weeks old, sexed, and we have a few available. We are a holistically based, soy free farm. The hens are a mixed flock and were covered (the rooster) with a buff Orpington. Located in Weare, NH.

Tonight’s dinner on the farm: pizza made with leftover sourdough from this week’s bakes.

Topped with red sauce, various shredded cheeses, and a bucket of toppings. Grass fed steak, my own canned caramelized onions, peppers, pickles, black olives and banana peppers. About a third with just pepperoni to use it up.

This only took a few minutes to throw together because most of the components were on my shelf. Also, defrosting hack for those of you that don’t have a microwave (like me) I put the steak in my instant pot with a little marinade for 5 minutes. Defrosted and par cooked - then finished in a cast iron skillet in just a couple minutes.

This also serves as my batch cooking for the week. It’ll fill in meals that I don’t have time to cook while I’m baking.

What kinds of things do you batch cook?

It’s so satisfying to put food on our table from our own backyard and other local farms. 💜💜💜

I truly believe my garlic cheddar sourdough bread goes with just about everything. 🥖🩵

Tonight’s pairing: chicken (rooster) cacciatore from my pantry. Made with our own chicken and tomatoes.

I wasn’t too hungry by the time we finished farm chores, so I’m having mine with a salad. Which is mostly feta cheese from Little Red Hen Farm & Market LLC. So. Delicious.

We welcomed these 2 sweet ladies to the farm today 😍 And for the third year in a row, mama delivered completely unassisted and with little fanfare.

They already have their own personalities, the black badgerface tried to climb back in her mama, while the little white one is very adventurous.

Congrats F***g and Odin on your second set of twins!

This completes Odins breeding responsibilities on the farm, but we will likely keep him around for his sweet temperament and lovely fiber.

Now, what are we going to name these girls?

In tonight’s addition of “We Eat From the Backyard”, Sloppy Hoppies.

A sloppy Joe made with rabbit meat. I stuffed it inside a grilled cheese made with my own garlic cheddar sourdough bread.

Cole slaw made with my own chive vinegar to zip it up a bit.

I love things like sloppy joes because you can add a bunch of veges and up the nutrient intake.

What’s on your table tonight? Even if you didn’t grow it yourself, someone, somewhere grew your food. 💜

These guys got new digs! We keep them in crates where they can easily snuggle for the first few days, and then into the brooder. We thought we’d try this as a next step brooder this year. It’s easily take up and down and plenty of room for this larger batch of babies.

We will have a few of these available in the coming weeks. DM to get on the waiting list!

It’s baby bunny time 💜

So far we have 8 kits from Moxie.

We are still waiting to see if her sister Poxie (yes, the grandkids named them!) will produce and if our new pedigreed doe, Juniper, will have her first litter. I think Poxie will give us something - although her litters are small. I’m pretty skeptical that Juniper took.

I wasn’t sure we were getting any kits so this is a win!

We are blessed to raise some of our own meat, but for those animals we aren’t raising ourselves, we are grateful for local options like the Little Red Hen Farm & Market LLC, one of our Boppy's Bakery partners. Their Greek GOAT sausage is amazing!! The more diverse our whole food diet is, the healthier our microbiome is.

We paired it with some squishy acorn squash from the bottom of the freezer 😂along with some salad greens also from the Hen.

Whats something new you’ve tried recently?

We hatched out 48 baby chicks this week. This is the first batch of the year and the first one with our new roosters. I think we have a nice mix of breeds.

We used 2 different brands of incubators with similar results. I thought the Brisnea would outperform the Matixcoop but they gave us the same hatch rate. A very good incubator for the momey.

Here’s hoping our hen to rooster ratio is as great as our hatch rate!

Baby chicken hugs. 😍😍😍

It was hard to get a good photo without disturbing them, they are huddled behind the heat plate. I check all of these babies a couple times a day at first to ensure they are growing and doing well. These are the reasons to buy quality chicks from local breeders. Happy, healthy chickens from day 1! 🐓 💜

02/07/2024

Next up: baby chicks! First chicken hatch of the year, and our first hatch from the new breeder stock we purchased last year. I’m excited to see these babies grow!

We will have few available next week, so stay tuned 💜

Tiny newly hatched quail cuteness! I’m glad one of our little farm hands was here to see them hatch this weekend.

Quail are our most recent addition to the farm this past year, and this is our first hatch from that flock. I still love chicken eggs, but quail eggs are so lovely and their yolks are mild. By weight, quail eggs have more protein than chicken eggs. They have easily become one of my favorite foods!

We’ve been busy with our new venture, a bakery! Check out Boppy's Bakery to see our beautiful sourdough breads and other treats!

But I’m happy to share that the farm is still Blooming… this week with brand new quail! Our first quail hatch seems to be a success so far. These babies are so tiny. 😍

We are excited to see what colors and patterns they have and to expand our quail flock here.

Chicken corn chowder after spending the day deep cleaning the chicken coop and sorting the chickens. It's a great reminder of why we do what we do.

So we can put our own food on our table and help others do the same.

Even more delightful in sourdough discard bread bowls.

If you are in the Weare, NH area, these bowls will be available for purchase soon!

What a beautiful weekend at the Common Ground Fair. So many aspects of this were wonderful, enriching and amazing. It’s a space with hundreds and hundreds of people. All sharing the core value of kindness and the desire to connect people with the plants and animals in a sustainable way. Where adults all pay attention to young ones as they wander through crowds. No one cares what ge****ls you have or what you are wearing. Everyone has a desire to learn and teach.

We sat in on some excellent workshops and lectures. We made more homestead and farm plans. We connected with some great local businesses. We have a deeper connection to each other, our farm, our land, and our community after this weekend.

We were greeted this morning by more babies on the farm:)

Our 5th hatch of chicks for the season and our third litter of baby silver Fox rabbits (kits).

These chicks are from eggs sourced from a wonderful local breeder Moonrise Farm LLC. I’m excited to diversify our flock this year. There will be extra pullets around the end of the summer/early fall. So stay tuned.

This will likely be our last litter of kits from Moxie and Jack, we are going to be focusing on purebred silver Fox moving forward. But they make some lovely babies and if you are looking for an inexpensive way to start your rabbitry, these kits (or the older ones from the last litter) would be a great option.

Moxie (mom) is a purebred silver Fox and Jack (dad) is a silver Fox mix.
