The founding of Willow Brook Farm

Little over 8 years ago, we bought our property in the town of West Newbury, located in the state of Massachusetts in the US. Neither one of us had much farming skills but knew enough to at least start planting flowers and veggies. At this point in our relationship I have graduated from mowing over the beautiful flowers to just staying on the grass.

The name of the farm was created while on a walk with the dogs. I was thinking about how much I adore the willow tree down by the brook and wham!!! That was the birth of the name of this farm “Willow Brook Farm”. Very close friends of ours promised us that he would make us a sign when we discover the name. The sign hangs beautifully on the side of one of the buildings on the property and can be seen upon arrival.

When we started we had over 21 sheep to start with that belonged to a local women who needed a place to train her dogs to herd the sheep for competition. It was a breath taking sight to hold. Eventually the sheep and their owners moved on and we decided to give chickens a try as well as goats and some ducks.

About three years ago, we added alpacas to our farm family. They are just stunningly beautiful. With all of these animals we have learned and continue to learn so much. One thing I (tom) am getting really good at, thanks to my years of working in the corporate world, I can shovel crap pretty good. The smell is less desirable but its got to get done.
